First retro livery?

Tue Apr 20, 2021 2:03 pm

Seems like a normal thing for an airline to have a retro livery in the fleet. Even cargo operators have done it (like the TransCarga A300 in Viasa livery). Can’t recall who was first. BA painted its first 747-100 (G-ANWA) in kind-of BOAC colours for its final weeks c. 1999, that must be one (although hardly counts as it was so short-lived). Who was first, or early to get onboard with the retro craze?

The Air Canada retro TCA A319 was done around 1998. That was one of my earliest memories of a retro livery.

Yes, I'm pretty sure AA's 'Astrojet' 757 was the first.

Think you are right. This was 1997 for their 60th. The AA Astrojet came out in January 1999

No that’s good. Hey before the mid-70s cheatline they had a unique set up, which was a unique livery for each aircraft type. Can’t think of another airline that did that. Very unorthodox but somehow appealing

Just looked up photos of that 757 Astro because I had no idea that it existed. That was such a pretty, pretty bird.

The retro TCA scheme on C-FZUH appeared in August of 1997.
AA's retro 757 scheme unveiled in January of 1999 was actually a "Flagship" scheme, celebrating the 40th anniversary of the first 707 in 1959.
The Astrojet scheme didn't appear until 1962 and this retro scheme was later applied to a 737.
Cheers.

How the hell has this thread ended up in this backwater....?
It’s about retro schemes....not Travel/Polls or preferences....
MODS, please return to civil aviation
Thank you.

Great thread BTW...

I know it’s not technically a retro-jet, but this one from 1983 deserves a mention.

Sadly, she's parked at MCI, now.

But, yeah, it was sharp. It was always at the A gates in DEN.

Yeah, one of my all-time favorites. I have a sentimental attachment to that livery - my first flight ever was an AA 707 ORD/LAX in 1967 carrying that livery
