Most Prone US Airports/Regions For Weather Diversions

Fri May 07, 2021 1:53 am

With SE Florida getting pounded by storms tonight, MIA and FLL saw a ton of diversions to TPA, MCO, RSW etc.

Got me thinking, weather wise, I think Florida airports as a whole seem to be high in diversions, especially in the summer. MCO, TPA, FLL, MIA, all see strong storms that cause sometimes daily diversions. Can't really think of other airports in the US that are that common in diversions related to weather.

Snow airports usually close or delay enough to not have diversions.

JFK. Because that then immediately affects LGA and EWR, followed quickly by BOS and PHL, then BWI, IAD, DCA, and then everyone else.

I'd speculate that IAH/HOU , DFW/DAL and DEN would be up there too.

Thought I'd add some airports that are common to receive diversions. When northeast airports require diversions (particularly the NYC area), SWF and ALB are major destinations. I remember one day a few years ago when SWF looked like a mini UA hub with the amount of diversions they had bound for EWR.

HPN is prone to fog due to its location, so diversions happen from time to time. B6 will go right over to JFK, while the RJ operators go to whichever base is most convenient. Farthest I've seen is UA (AWI) divert to IAD.
You can always go around

Three letters: DFW.

I'm willing to bet OKC or AUS sees more diversions per year than any other airport in the country. Maybe IAH as well.

And yes, Florida sees tons of small but powerful t-storms, meaning diversions rarely go to other states.
Next flights:
Who knows? :/

SFO, ATL, NYC area airports, ORD, and DFW come to mind.

Case in point: OKC has seen over 30, possibly 40 diversions from DFW over three separate days this past week.

I've done IAD-SAT-IAH(almost)-SAT-IAH in one day due to weather in IAH. The first IAH is almost because we were in a holding pattern for longer than the actual block time and went back to SAT.
When wasn't America great?
