I'm curious if anyone remembers how gates/stands were assigned at Kai Tak. On the several times I arrived/departed from HKG, I used both hard stands and jetways but there never seemed to be any rhyme or reason why sometimes you'd get a jetway and sometimes deplane from the airstairs. Also didn't seem to matter what airline. Although I always seemed to get the airstairs when it was torrential rain!
I wonder if it was something the airlines needed to pay for, or just assigned based on ramp flow optimization.

Sorry I don't remember, however if it helps todays HKIA prohibits airlines from making claim to gates or adding anything but temporary signage for the duration the gate is used by an airline.

Yeah, I remember flying on a Cathay Pacific 747 to/from Manila and we had a remote stand. Maybe it was just a case of whatever was available. That was kind of before the time when airlines realized they could save money by not paying for jetbridges. These days airlines will park at a jetbridge and then not use it.

From what I recell they only had around 10 stands with bridges? And you only got a stand if you had a turnaround of an hour.
