Shortest current flights using A321 or larger

Fri May 28, 2021 1:47 pm

Charlotte and Raleigh/Durham are separated by a bee-line distance of only 130 miles. After experiencing a CLT-RDU flight on AA’s workhorse A321, I’m wondering if you guys know of any shorter routes utilizing an aircraft this large or larger. I mean, CLT-RDU wheels up to wheels down was 31 minutes, on an A321. Does any other comparatively short route use a comparable or larger plane? And historically, which short routes have typically used relatively large equipment? Thanks.

Slightly longer (150 miles), but BA uses an A321 on LHR-MAN.

Staying within the US, SEA-PDX is shorter by one whole mile and AS runs A321s as part of the mix on that route.

DL is back to offering BNA-ATL service every 90 minutes or so with almost all the flights on 739s or 321s. It's 37 minutes in the air, though longer distance wise at 210ish miles.

AA operates the 321 on some DFW-AUS flights. It's about 30 minutes in the air and just under 200 miles direct.

I assume you are only asking about passenger flights. If you include cargo airlines, there are frequent very short flights on widebody jets in/out of MEM, SDF, and IND. FedEx runs an A300 BNA-MEM and BNA-IND almost daily.

Not the shortest, but pretty short anyway. American sometimes puts an A321 on the Orlando - Miami route. Route is mostly operated by a 737, but A321s are seen here as well.

Aegean regularly (pre covid at least) puts the 321 on ATH-JTR. Flight time 25-30 mins, and 118nm

Yup. And I realize the OP wants “current” but ATL-BHM/GSP/SAV are around the same length and all have copious mainline service in more normal times. And if we want to talk about sports upgauges, how about ATL-AGS for the Masters or ORD/DTW-SBN for Notre Dame football?

More germane to the OP’s specific question, it looks like DTW-GRR (120 miles) has a 321 RON in the current schedule.

And historically, NW flew 757s on MSP/DTW-ORD/MKE as well as DTW-GRR, and DL flew 757s on CVG-CMH and maybe CVG-SDF. Many of the city pairs mentioned in this thread also saw 757 service.

There are several short flights with large aircraft in Asia.

Singapore - Kuala Lumpur is 295 km / 183 US miles. Flying time is around 35 minutes, and sees regular A350 and 777-300ER service.
Emirates flew the A380 between Dubai and Muscat, which is 350 km / 220 US miles.

FRA-NUE (102nm), which mostly operated with A319 and CRJ900 does sometimes have an A321, when there is high demand. Happened to me once so far.

My shortest time airborne was once 21 minutes on that route, but can't remember which type.

Apparently A321 also flown rarely on MUC-NUE (74nm), but there I've only flown on CRJ900. At least once I've seen an A320s operating that route, but at the moment it is currently not operating at all due to low demand because of COVID19.

This will be a HOT summer in Europe! LX/WK already announced several destination like OPO, PMI etc. to serve with widebody aircraft like B777/A340. Also German charter airline CONDOR announced European summer schedule with B767-300ER...
