R/T PHL-MCO in F - $3,297

Sat Jun 05, 2021 1:27 am

How is an airfare of $3,300 between PHL and MCO in First even possible? Is Raju Vasu that arrogant that he thinks people will pay that? Hs AA lost its nd ( well, that's rhetorical)

Its getting ridiculous. 2019 PHX-SYD with 14 nights in a nice apartment hotel for 3500 in Premium economy including hotel. Booked thru AA vacations with 20 K bonus miles. Right now its 2 stop to LAX from PHX then the LAX SYD leg for 20 K that's almost 7x more. How in the He## do you make a stop going to LAX from PHX?

You can travel in F most days, including tomorrow, from the low $600s. Even the 788, when it operates on the route later this month, is available at that price.

Yes, Raju personally sets every fare because he is so arrogant.

This is how supply and demand works.

So a r/t tomorrow (6/5), that is outbound and return on the same day, purchased today (6/4), less than 24 hrs in advance, shows in F a low price of 721 and a top price of 2689. but when I went to book, AA wouldn't let me. Orbitz is showning AA top price at 2039. OTOH, UA is offering a flight via ORD for 3464. I guess someone is willing to pay the price.
Can I have a mojito on this flight?

Not very informative post (which flights and dates??). Yes, there are some flights where there are only a few seats left for sale and they have zero'd out inventory in all the FC buckets other than J. AA1719 on 6/11 and AA1979, AA1832 on 6/13, for example. Two J fares roundtrip equals $3296.80 (full J are $1648.40 one-way). These full flights look to be at the most popular times and do not actually seem all that commonplace. Will they likely sell any of these full J fares? Probably not. But they are willing to see if anyone bites and then may release some inventory in lower FC fare buckets at a later date to sell those 1 or 2 remaining seats.

Since it is a flight leaving a hub, could they be holding back the seats (by pricing them ridiculously) for connections? I know that pre-Covid some airlines over-priced F/C flights that lined up with international connections so that they could sell more F and J trips with a domestic F connection. Those seats will sell.... Just drop them to a reasonable price just days before departure.

I specifically remember fares east coast to Europe in first being around $3000 Pre-covid. What’s the story here?

I checked a number of different origins on ExpertFlyer connecting to AA1719 on 6/11 and the flight was always J1 R0 D0 I0. So, no, they are not opening any lower fare buckets than J when married to other segments.

These are heavily discounted business-class fares and they are still available just as they were pre-Covid. You can find lots of US-Europe routes with roundtrip business class fares under $3000 in late July through mid to late August. This is a slow time for business travel and consequently the airlines tend to discount the business class cabins heavily as they would otherwise go mostly empty. These generally have fairly lengthy advance purchase requirements of 50 to 60 days, so at this point you will likely only see them for August travel dates. This doesn't really have anything with OP who is selectively picking flights that are nearly full in their First Class cabin and AA only has inventory open in it's most expensive fare class bucket. The $3,297 fare is definitely not typical for the route as other posters have noted.

I'm not going to obsess over a few algorithm-generated edge case fares. I don't expect AA to conduct indidually overseen prices on 200 million segments a year.

This. It’s been true seemingly forever that passengers who simply must fly Flight X on Day Y in Cabin Z are sometimes going to pay through the nose for that privilege. Nothing to see here.

This would be the same for every airline. Does the OP have some vendetta against AA? Or perhaps a personal grudge against Vasu Raja which would explain the disrespectful misspelling of his name?

I'm flying LAX-LHR-TLV RT on AA/BA in first at the start of August, came in at $4300 all in.

LAX-LHR-CPT RT in Jan, again on AA/BA in first came in at $4500 all in.

So yes, there are some crazy fares out there, but there are also some amazing bargains to be found.
