From a good airport source that I just spoke with this week, ABIA was slated to get a nonstop to Tokyo a few weeks before COVID shut it all down.
The rumor was it was Japan Airlines.
A year ago we were aware of the Japan nonstop rumors, we just weren't sure of the carrier. Nonetheless is it was great news either way.
Meanwhile, It's still slow going here traffic wise but definitely picking up with both runways open again and summer traffic bumping up flight frequencies. KLM is slated to start their non stop AMS service March 2022 on a 3-5 day a week schedule. The current A330 nonstop to HNL on Hawaiian Air doesn't hurt either, albeit it's only a few times a week.

Hopefully the purported non stop to HND or NRT from 2020 will also return within the next 2 years. The enormous Tesla plant/HQ just east of the airport may help speed up any future international travel growth.

JL is more likely to add AUS-TYO nonstop service than NH is with JL having nonstop service to TYO from BOS, HNL, KOA, SAN, SEA, and IAD in addition to AA's ORD, DFW, LAX, and JFK hubs compared to NH who has nonstop service to TYO from HNL, JFK, and SEA in addition to UA's ORD, IAH, LAX, SFO, and IAD hubs.

JL would also have some connecting feed onto AUS-TYO flights on both ends of the route if it adds AUS-TYO nonstop service, including from/onto JL flights out of TYO, from/onto AA AUS-CLT/MIA nonstop flights, and from/onto AA p2p flights out of AUS.
