Smallest airport with long haul service

Sat Jun 12, 2021 9:02 pm

On the wiki page for Fairbanks airport, it states FAI is the smallest airport in the US to have long haul service, as Condor flies to Frankfurt.

Got me thinking, what is the smallest airport in the entire world with long haul service? My guess would be a remote island airport, perhaps St. Helena or Easter Island... Any ideas/guesses? Thought this would be an interesting topic to discuss.

PPT has a fair amount of short-haul service, no? Places like IPC have literally no service other than their long-haul flights.

Or Rarotonga ? The island of Tahiti has a population of around 180 000, while the island of Rarotonga has barely 10 000. Outside of Covid-19 times there is a weekly 9-10 hour LAX-RAR flight.

I know Rapanui/Easter Island has an even smaller population, but to the best of my knowledge, the longest flight into IPC clocks in at about 5.5 hours. I acknowledge that "long haul" is a very subjective term, but personally, I wouldn't consider any flight under 7 hours to be long haul ( possible geographic bias on my part, coming from a part of the world where 4-5 hour flights are usually referred to as 'regional', others who are used to flight times of an hour or less might very well consider 5 hours long haul :-) )

As an afterthought, do the Falkland/Malvinas Islands have any long haul civil flights , or just military ones ?

I’d have to imagine the Air Saint Pierre flight from St Pierre to Paris once a week in the summer season would make Saint Pierre one of the smallest airports with a long haul flight. It’s not the longest flight but it is transatlantic so I figure that counts for something.

IPC-SCL is only four hours, not really ‘long haul’.

What about Mount Pleasant/Falklands?

Small by size or by passenger count? Whitehorse (YXY) in Yukon, Canada saw 366k passengers in 2017 and has seasonal Condor service to Frankfurt.

Maybe Rzeszow's flight to EWR? Rzeszow has a population of about 180k with transatlantic service and only handles 600-700k passengers a year.

From May 2022 on Orlando Melbourne airport (MLB) could be a contender here as it will be the Orlando airport for TUI. From several British airports TUI will fly to this airport.

Right now these flights are still operated to Orlando Sanford airport (SFB). Not exactly the largest airport either, but as a base for Allegiant at least it sees some traffic numbers. In 2020 Sanford served 1.5 million passengers. Melbourne isn't a hub for any airline, it's really small. Number of passengers is unknown, but likely very few.

Talking about these TUI flights, one of them flies from Doncaster-Sheffield (DSA) which is a former military airbase that has been converted into a civilian airport. It's also very small, but passenger numbers are on the rise with the recently opened Wizzair base there.

Another long haul flight would be Moscow Vnukovo to Anadyr, all the way in eastern Siberia near the Bering Strait. Anadyr is a very small airport, passenger numbers are unknown but the town of Anadyr only has about 15k people living there. Utair flies a 767 on this route if I'm not mistaken.

Cayenne, French Guiana would be one of the smaller cities with long haul service. 63k population in city proper, 145k in metro area. 539k passengers a year pre-COVID.

That’s a pretty unusual route

What’s the attraction for Germans to go to Fairbanks?

My guess would be Alaskan river cruises, perhaps just tourism packages sold by the airline and other agencies. Lots of stunning scenery, and even the northern lights are a major attraction. Tourism is quite seasonal in FAI, and I wouldn't think that route is served more than 2x weekly.

Rarotonga, Cook Islands perhaps. Island of 10600 people with long haul flights to Auckland (4.5 hours), Los Angeles (10 hours) and Sydney ( 6 hours )

Really? It doesn't have that many destinations, but the smallest plane that regularly serves it is a CR7 and it was around 250k passengers/year before COVID. The numbers are here: https://www.transtats.bts.gov/Data_Elements.aspx?Data=1. Just filter for the correct airport. That's not a major airport, but it's not "unknown." It's 2.5 times as many as RAR, which was mentioned above.

IPC also has one weekly flight to PPT, nearly 8 hours flight. MPN only has charter long-haul flights

Rzeszow is a capital of a region Podkarpacie. This is part of Poland that saw the biggest emigration to US in XIX and XX century and mostly to New York area. For this reason most of diaspora travel from New York area is actually to RZE (although mostly channelled by LO via WAW). The same way most of emigration to the Chicago area came from the nearby Malopolska region (Lesser Poland region), whose capital is Krakow. Thus you see LO direct flights KRK-ORD (two weekly this year, was three weekly pre-covid).

All in all having these direct flights is a bonus for diaspora travellers who can fly direct at least on one leg, if not both, and distingushes LO from for example LH, which pre-covid was flying to RZE, what I recall, two daily in order to serve the same diaspora travel via MUC.

On top of that there is a lot of aviation industry in the nearby of RZE, so I expect a bit of the cargo as well.

Figures are axctually a tiny bit higher than stated by Rossiya747: 200k population and the airport handling in 2019 some 800k pax.

I think Condor used to fly to Whitehorse, Yukon from Frankfurt some years ago or due to covid stopped service since.

Azores Airlines' seasonal TER-OAK has always been an interesting one - operated now by the A321-LR.

Terceira has a population of around 56,000 - the flight is 4,907 miles.
