Can French citizens living in Africa travel to USA?

Mon Jun 14, 2021 9:53 am

Hello,

Am asking a question on behalf of a friend as the U.S. Govt website and IATA Timatic arent clear about this.

Basically, what is understood is that anyone (non-US immigrant) who flies from EU to USA along with transit is not permitted to enter USA.

However, can EU citizens (who have not been in EU/UK for the past 14 days) such as those been living in Africa allowed to enter USA presently or not if they fly nonstop on ET or DL ?

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Thank you

Not sure about French citizens, but UK travel vlogger Noel Phillips entered the US after spending 14 days in Mexico.

Thx for the quick answer. So if he managed to do that, then it means all EU citizens who have not been in EU for 14 days prior to their arrival in USA are eligible as well I reckon?

From 29Jun, Swiss citizens can enter USA provided they fly nonstop on LX or any American carrier only. They cannot enter if they transit via FRA CDG AMS MAD.

Perhaps phone nearest US Embassy or Consulate ? I wouldn't want to buy a ticket, and then be refused boarding because a gate agent had to guess what is or isn't allowed based on vague wording in Timatic

we did and were asked to send an email which got an automated response as the person who answered the call refused to give info over it

Sounds like you need to phone the US Embassy and push a bit harder for a proper answer

Living WHERE in Africa?

Per IATA: "Passengers who have transited or have been in Austria, Belgium, Brazil, China (PRC), Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, India, Iran, Ireland (Rep.), Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland or in the United Kingdom (excluding overseas territories outside of Europe), in the past 14 days are not allowed to enter and transit." and there are exceptions to this, such as US citizens, airline or ship crews, people with certain visa classes, students from certain countries, siblings under 21 yrs old of a US national, etc.

But if you're a French citizen, (so not needing a US visa,) and are coming from Africa--but not South Africa--and not transiting the countries above (whether Johannesburg OR Paris, etc.), you should be okay. Though I'm surprised Tanzania is not on that list, because they refuse to report any data, so who knows the status of things. I believe the burden to return you if denied access is on the airline, no? If you're not getting answers from government officialdom, try the airlines you're thinking of flying (not AF, LH, BA, etc.) as they SHOULD be the most up to date on the rules.

For sure, as of today (who knows tomorrow or next week ?) Tanzania and Kenya are part of the list.
I would not trust airline staff too as they can simply overlook the rules. And those days they are really stubborn.
No matter how right will you friend be, if (s)he can travel to the US (s)he must report at least 3h the departure.

Yes, they can. Provided they have a valid visa or ESTA, they are admissable to the US.
The best way is to fly nonstop from Africa or via a country that is not on the list of banned countries (basically Europe+ India+ China and a few others).
Via Dubai or Doha, or Istanbul should be fine as well.
