How did Delta have such a quick turnaround for its reputation in the early 2010s?

All of these links from 2010-2011 show Delta in a very harshly negative tone.

But then, out of the blue, in 2012, some impressive turnaround occurs.

I want to know how is it that they were able to make such a turnaround in the span of just one year? I mean, nowadays, Delta seems to be pretty liked when talking about US carriers but was it really that bad 10 years ago? As a DL fan, it naturally saddened me to see those statistics but as I was an infant back then, I cannot tell for myself. And if DL was really bad back then, WHY? I thought out of the big 3, DL usually was a bit more liked, but I guess that was not always the case. And, HOW were they able to make such a drastic improvement in the span of a year and able to maintain that through the 2010s? That is, unless none of these reports are accurate and this is all baloney...

I've flown on DL multiple times in 2009 and 2010 and never had any issues, and never expected any issues either. I don't recall DL having a particularly negative image back then.

However, back in 2010, there were still many long haul aircraft without PTVs in Y (744, 763) and the 744s and 330s had angled lie flat seats in J (with recliners in some long haul 763s). I believe by 2012, pretty much all long haul aircraft were retrofitted to have the newer amenities.

Suggest read the book "Glory Lost and Found: How Delta Climbed from Despair to Dominance in the Post-9/11 Era "

This is a great resource. If the question is specifically about the 2010-2012 time period, I’d suggest that the answer is a very smooth merger process in which management strive to integrate the best of both constituent carriers, something that did not happen at CO/UA or AA/US.

They had two high profile fatal accidents in a fairly short time span as well, the L1011 and the B727 at DFW

They also had a very close call and near midair with one of their Tristars and a Continental 747 over the Atlantic

All the above were attributed to crew errors and they had to completely overhaul their training department

Yes’m in the mid-80s, DL had enough “issues” the FAA did a special investigation on them. But, in the last decade they have become first in service and schedule reliability. They’re first in my book, but AA and UA don’t set a very high bar here.

And how does this relate to them in the 2010-2012 time period?

They did it in the same way CO did it before them, they improved service levels.

They also did it at a time when UA and AA were cutting costs, making the sudden improvement even more of a stand out.

I only flew DL a couple of times before 2015 and honestly I didn't find anything wrong with them, however, DL had really stepped up their game by 2015 and they were a step ahead of AA and UA by then.

Those accidents were in 1985 and 1988 and have nothing to do with Delta's turnaround in 2010-12. Not sure what your point was in even mentioning them, but not appropriate to the inquiry as to their recovery.

I don't recall Delta having a particularly bad reputation back then either. From what I remember their reputation was more or less average, that they were pretty much the same as all the other legacies. But the decade after 9/11 was marked by steadily levels of service among all the legacies, so I guess you might say all the legacy airlines had a bad reputation at that time, with Continental being the one holdout mainlining reasonably high levels of service.

The new branding definitely helped their image as well.

The smooth merger with NW, rebranding, Richard Anderson's leadership, focus on customer service, improving in-flight products (hard and soft), operational reliability. All these factors played a part in getting DL to where it is today.
