How Many Aircraft in Storage?

Thu Jun 24, 2021 10:45 pm

I'm curious as to how many aircraft the 'big 4' North American carriers (UA, DL, AA, WN) still have in storage. Given the upturn in travel I'd guess it would be a pretty small number, but I suspect there still may be a few airplanes remaining in storage.

Thanks in advance for any info.

DL

In-storage, not retired/removed from service
A221: 5
A319: 13
A320: 1 (being reactivated this week)
A332: 3
A333: 3
B738: 2
B752: 12
B763: 3-5 (that may not yet be permanently retired)
B764: 2

Total: 44-46

All A223, A321, A339, A359, B739, B753 have been reactivated / in active service.
All of the B712 that haven't been removed from service (51) are in active service.

Thanks, would it be reasonable to assume that these aircraft are in the process of returning to service? It's actually a pretty small number. Thanks again.

Give a close read to the SEC 10-Q filings from the respective carriers. They should be coming out in about three weeks. They will cite active fleet as of 6/30/21, numbers stored, and likely update purchase commitments.

Not necessarily all are coming back into service this year.
Some will be parked into 2022, particularly anything a heavy maintenance check. DL is backlogged at getting aircraft through MRO which has caused a few A319, B738, B752 to be put into storage over the past few months as they time out.
The 2 B764 won’t come out until 2022.

The A221 are parked because of pilot training backlog.

That being said, some aircraft just won’t be needed in 2021 until we head into the 2022 spring / summer peak.
