Fleet with the highest average capacity

Tue Jul 06, 2021 7:27 pm

AA may have the largest fleet but if you divide the number of seats by the number of aircraft who would likely be the highest? After Emirates of course...

Play around with planespotters.net. Or, if you really want to know who flies the most capacity look at annual reports for ASKs/ASMs. Emirates was not the winner for 2019, in spite of the A380s.

SQ before silk air merger comes to mind. But such stats are meaningless because some small airlines flying only few narrow bodies with high density config will be up top. For example plus ultra only has 3 300+ seats a340. French bee has for A350 with over 400 seats might even be more than Emirates on average

My guess is CX if not counting Emirates. QR isnt a bad guess but they do have alot of narrowbodies even if they have many higher capacity aircraft. The same goes for SQ now that they took over the 737's, but with less of these in the fleet, their overall average capacity has to be higher than QR.

ok it is a bit outdated but if you realy want to know who is the biggest:

By scheduled passenger-kilometers flown (millions)

Rank Group Country 2017[3]
1 American Airlines Group United States 364,191
2 Delta Air Lines United States 350,299
3 United Airlines Holdings United States 347,963
4 The Emirates Group United Arab Emirates 292,221
5 Lufthansa Group Germany 261,156
6 International Airlines Group Spain/ United Kingdom/ Ireland 252,819
7 Air France–KLM France/ Netherlands 248,476
8 China Southern Airlines China 230,697
9 Southwest Airlines United States 207,802
10 Air China China 201,090

Or try by turnover

Don’t think OP is asking about the airline with largest total capacity. I think he’s asking about the largest average capacity per physical plane across the whole fleet.

Now divide that by total planes in the fleets and we will have the answer.

Remember back when utilization and load factor weren't the prime drivers of the legacy airlines?

Sorry, but I think what the writer is after this: (total seats in the fleet from all aircraft) divided by (total aircraft)

This can be 2 formulas, one excluding cargo aircraft and one including cargo aircraft, if they have cargo aircraft in the fleet.

I think you're on to something with French Bee - they have 411 seats per aircraft on their all A350 fleet.

https://us.frenchbee.com/en/our-A350-fleet

Corsair aircraft seat 304-352, Air Austral's 777's seat 443 but they have smaller aircraft too, as do Air Caraibes.

Anyone beat French Bee?

I guess it'll be between someone small like French Bee with a high capacity, single type, and a major like Emirates.

Azur Air has 531 seats in their 77W's. ;)

Yeah they have but, the question was about the fleet and Azur has many NBs while French Bee hat 4 A350 with 443 seats.

Maybe there is some charter somewhere with single high density 77w, but I can't find anything.

True, but they also got smaller aircraft that have a lower capacity. Those are dragging down the average.

Air Azur has a bunch of 737s, 757s and 767s with lower capacity than their 777s. I can't find the actual capacity for them but when accounting for the maximum capacity Azur Air seems to have an average capacity of 319 seats per aircraft. Not too bad, but not enough to win.

For the US3, would you count their regional affiliates? All those little regional flights are technically not their flights. I think that, at least among the US airlines, if you added all the regional ops into their respective parent airlines, the highest pax per aircraft would be Southwest. Although they don't have 777s and the such, they also don't have any CRJs or Embraers.

I don't think it would be Southwest, they still got a lot of 737-700s which aren't that big. When it comes to that, Spirit and Frontier have a larger average aircraft size due to the A321s in their fleet. They also don't have any CRJs or Embraers and they have very few A319s. Besides, they have a very narrow seat pitch with the maximum number of seats per aircraft. Southwest has a higher seat pitch and therefor fewer seats per aircraft.

Edit: After some calculations it appears to be Frontier Airlines that has the highest average capacity with 193 seats per plane. In second place comes Spirit with 183 seats average per plane and in third place Allegiant with 177 seats per plane on average. Southwest comes in 4th place with only an average of 155 seats per plane.
