History of the Northwest/NW 747, did NW ever fly the B747-100?

I was wondering of the history of the Northwest/NW 747. Did Northwest ever fly the B747-100?

I believe they had 12 or so 747-100 from the 1970's to the 1990's

They sure did and they flew them well into the 1990s. They had 12. All but two were built in 1970. The last two were built in 1976. One is partially preserved, N601US. The rest were scrapped. The last -100 left the NWA fleet in 2000.

Northwest Orient as it was then was a launch customer for the 747

Flew on one from LGW to BOS in the mid 90's. She rattled and groaned during the taxi, rattled, groaned and shook during take off, smooth as silk once she got in the air, glorious old beast that she was. The only bad thing about the flight was the aerial aerobics that NW were encouraging at the time, how embarrassing watching people trying to exercise in an aircraft seat

this information is from rzjets.net

N601US (747-151) ln 27
N602US (747-151) ln 40
N603US (747-151) ln 45
N604US (747-151) ln 55
N605US (747-151) ln 62
N606US (747-151) ln 71
N607US (747-151) ln 74
N608US (747-151) ln 75
N609US (747-151) ln 83
N610US (747-151) ln 93
N620US (747-135) ln 68 previously N77772
N621US (747-135) ln 81 previously N77773

Quoting ContinentalEWR (Reply # 3), "All but two were built in 1970. The last two were built in 1976."

ContinentalEWR, based on this source (rzjets.net), all aircraft were manufactured in 1970; however, the last two were acquired by Northwest in 1976 from National Airlines.

We used to have a saying for ships 622-635: Twenty Two to Thirty Five more to do to stay alive. What it meant was that there was a ditching handle at door 3 that you pulled if you had a ditching, you’d get the ramp, but not the slide.

If you search in the Photo Database for 747-100 and Northwest Airlines, you will get 94 photos.

Can you expand a little bit, not sure I understand. Was that "ramp" the raft portion of the slide? Or was it a hard ramp.

Reminds me of the 747-8i upper deck door slides that you can inflate an extra few feet (can't remember how many) in case the main center gears (the ones on the body) do not deploy or if they collapse and the plane is sitting on its tail: given the length of the fuselage, that slide would be too short and would be too steep to safely glide down.

The door 3 747 ramp/slide would interfere with the door 4 slide. On the earlier planes (up 621) it was a one piece, so we would disarm door 3 if we knew there was going to be a ditching. On ships 622-635 it was a two piece, and by pulling the ‘ditching handle’ you were disabling the slide down from the wing, but the ramp to the trailing edge of the wing still inflated. The door was still not supposed to be used in a ditching, but if for some reason it needed to be opened the slide wouldn’t interfere with door 4.

I flew on 6601 from HNL to MSP in the early 90's on the upper deck . It had not been painted in the bowling shoe colors at that time.

N620 and 621 were commonly referred to as "Laverne and Shirly".

And they were almost the sole US carrier that flew a 747-300 as they had bought two from Swissair and gave them N-numbers and I remember somebody telling me they were going to use them for flights to Hawaii, however they ended up only being used as parts donors for the 100s and 200s

In August of 1974 I flew on a Northwest Orient 747 from DTW to JFK. I was only 5 years old at the time but I believe it was one of the early 747-100s as I recall it having only three windows on each side of the upper deck.
