First time PDX

Tue Jul 27, 2021 8:51 pm

So I was in Oregon last week (first time ever) and flew BOS-PDX F on AS. Was a decent experience but still prefer seat-back entertainment.
Either way, I was shocked at the state of the airport. It looked like a dump to me! Broken walkways, obstructions everywhere, ceiling missing panels, dungeon-like baggage claim, etc.
What was super nice however, was the light rail link to downtown Portland. Absolutely top-notch and something straight out of Europe. Night and day difference between the airport and the train. Who knew!

The airport is currently in a complete terminal rebuild. There is a lot of signage explaining this everywhere in the terminal. You cannot simply shut down a terminal in order to rebuild it. We often say that phasing in a new terminal is akin to performing heart surgery while the patient is running a marathon. Go look at www.pdxnext.com

The new airport design looks gorgeous. But I hope the construction does not end up in a same quagmire as DEN.

Yeah, right now the airport looks like a mess. Since you flew in on AS, you walked through Concourse C which is the largest concourse at PDX. If you flew in on UA or WN, you would have walked through the new Concourse E and would have had an entirely different experience.

I absolutely agree with you about the baggage claim area, though. The celling panels are all missing, so there are few (if any) installed lights. Little to no natural light is able to flow through the area because the baggage claim is adjacent to the arrivals pick-up area (with the departures area directly above it and the parking garage across the way, which blocks out any natural light). In addition, the celling itself is so low that it definitely gives off a 'dudgeon'-like vibe.
