Basic Economy isn't "bottom of the barrel". With regular economy, passengers will still have access to upgrades and seat assignments, which can also mean getting choice overhead bin space. They also board before Basic Economy, though I believe you can circumvent that with a DL Amex gold or higher card.

DL should have just curtailed the number of routes that offer basic economy fare during the pandemic like AA did. This non-BE BE fare stuff is going to cause issues when they do finally start enforcing the fare rules.
