LA Olympics 2028- will airlines fly bigger planes domestically?
I was just wondering if when the Olympics come to LA in 2028, will the bigger airlines (DL,UA, AA) fly bigger aircraft domestically from smaller cities to LA? Like for example maybe DL does MKE-LAX on an A330 or A350, or AA does OMA-LAX on a 787? I have a feeling by then most of the classic widebodies (767, 777) will be gone.

maybe generally what most domestic airlines do is slash and burn the regional fleet and bring in larger narrowbodies, moving capacity through the network as thats easier to schedule and to handle

Maybe DL will be the official sponsor, as they were in SLC and ATL. It would be a great opportunity to show off their remodeled LAX facilities. And I’m sure a special Olympic livery will look great on their fleet of 737-8 MAX and 787-10!

Doubt it, I'm guessing the big three will downsize all LAX flights to ERJs

We are still to far away, to make a realistic prediction.
But assuming that we do not have any travel restrictions.
Past Olympics, have show a very modest increase of air traffic (if any),during the duration of the games. Because typically, the regular travelers/visitors, stay out during the games, also local events, conventions, etc, are scheduled in a way not conflict with the games.
Olympic visitors are more like "substitute traffic". What might happen is that destinations and traffic patterns might change, but that gets fixed relatively easy by just moving around the same fleet for the most part.
But still air traffic might go up thru the whole Olympic year, because of preparations, regular summer events scheduled during spring or autumn.
In Los Angeles case, we are more likely to see this bump in capacity, for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, this attracts way more visitors, and you can expect +100,000 fans arriving within 1-2 days for most single games. and then you need to move most of them to the next game on a different city. Then you are likely to see several runs by widebodies, or even a fleet chartered widebodies moving around fans thru the US, Canada and Mexico.

The Olympics are far less of a demand spike for the airlines than, say, Thanksgiving or Christmas. I’m sure they’ll upgauge a bit but the only widebodies coming from small cities would be chartered flights.

You do realize that by 2028, their remodeled LAX facility will be at least 5 years old??

The A330 came out before the 777...

No doubt it will be a competitive bid between the Big 3 for sponsorship, and recall UA was the official airline of the LA 1984 Summer Games.

Having said that, does the Olympics drive domestic traffic? It would seem to me more of an international affair.
Each time the Olympics have been held in the states since LA 1984, there has been some form of major airport expansion, of which was designed with an international purpose in mind (LA 1984: 2nd level departure curbside, two-story landside expansion & TBIT, ATL 1996: Concourse E, LA 2028: Multiple projects underway including MSC) .

I think it's much more likely that you can see some special one-off flights from countries sending their athletes to LA, similar to the global summits where all the world leaders fly their planes. Like central African airlines sending one of their flagship aircraft to LAX, for example. Or Caribbean sending a 737 from KIN-LAX.
