Did the VARIG MD-11/B743 ever fly GRU-LAX-NRT?

Fri Jul 30, 2021 7:50 pm

I remember that VARIG served Japan by flying the GRU-LAX-NRT route with the MD-11/B743. Is this true and was there that much of a market from Brazil to Japan? I just read that Brazil has the largest amount of Japanese people outside of Japan.

They did fly the MD11 on GRU-LAX-NRT and I believe the 747 at times as well.

Unrelated, but for a long time, there was a also a JAL flight that went from JFK to GRU.

I've always said United would do well with a SFO-GRU flight to connect to the TPAC hub. But GRU is the reason why NRT-IAH was a slam dunk for CO from day one.

Yep, absolutely true.

There are many pics of Varig aircraft in Japan. Varig service to Japan started in the 1960s as far as I know.
They also had flights to Nagoya at some point.
