US Infrastructure Bill

Wed Aug 11, 2021 2:42 am

Today the US Senate approved the 1.2 Trillion (USD) Infrastructure bill that includes $65 billion for US railroads. Could vastly improved rail service threaten the airlines within the US?

Only if they all become hyperloops.

It'd probably cost more than $1.2T just to build a high speed rail between LA & SF...

Not a chance.
Outside a few major city’s that use rail for commuter traffic, and Amtrack in the NY, Boston, Philly zone.
Transportation by rail is basically unknown to most Americans.

It's unknown because it's horribly unreliable and slow. The Acela in the Northeast corridor can't even get up to its top speed most of the time due to track limits and other train traffic. If money was no question, a dedicated high speed rail the likes of the Shinkansen connecting the United States would be fantastic. The other issue to solve is that besides in some parts of the country like the Northeast and Socal, population centers are spread out much more than in other points around the world with high speed rail.

In a word, no. You could spend the entire 1.2T on making true high speed rail for the Northeast Corridor, and still come up short.

Our rail system in the US is far from broken, it's the most efficient way to move freight across this country.

So what will they spend the money on? Track upgrades and renovation?

Not all infrastructure is rail, a lot will be spent on roads as well. There are a good number of bridges, both road and rail bridges, that need to be upgraded or replaced.

As far as rail is concerned, maybe some regional tracks will be electrified so you no longer need diesel engines to move the trains. After all rail can't keep relying on fossil fuels forever.

I really can’t see trains eating into air service…. Having no crystal ball though, one never knows. It will be so expensive to build new rail lines, I can’t justify it.

Sorry, should have been more clear, I was referring to the railway funds. Would be great to know what it will be used for. I guess electrifying the network would be a step in the right direction.

Any pax rail that matters is already electric. Rail that AMTRAK rides on is owned by the freight carriers. They might get some of the money. The stupid way we do this needs to change. Congress agrees on some large, political hay-making number and passes it. The appropriations committees agree on a plan to dole out the money by district and it’s wasted.

$30 billion of the $66 billion go to ONE NYC project. Goes to show the waste in the system when maybe 1% of the US population get half of the money.

Unbelievable.......that should give a definitive answer to the OP's question. Certainly goes to show why HSR will never be a viable thing in the US - imagine the cost if $30B only buys wheat's talked about in the article
