Is WN likely to re-add DAL-BOS/CLE/DTW/PHL nonstop service in 2022?

Sat Aug 28, 2021 11:38 pm

While WN was originally planning on resuming DAL-BOS/CLE/DTW/PHL nonstop service in 2020, WN dropped DAL-BOS/CLE/DTW/PHL nonstop service due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

WN has already resumed the other routes out of DAL that it was originally planning on serving nonstop from DAL in 2020 on at least a less-than-daily basis (plus some other adds and resumptions such as DAL-BOI/BZN/ORD/COS/VPS/HDN/IAH/LGB/MIA/MTJ/MYR/ORF/RNO/SRQ/SAV).

WN has already made cuts in its flight schedules through January 5, 2022 (the current end of its flight schedule), and WN has its next schedule extension on September 16, 2021 which will extend its flight schedule to April 24, 2022.

WN has more than enough room at DAL to accommodate daily DAL-BOS/CLE/DTW/PHL nonstop service as WN is currently down to 175 daily departures out of DAL in January 2022 (compared to the 195 daily departures that WN was operating out of DAL prior to the COVID-19 pandemic).

WN had also stated that it was planning on restoring its route network to pre-pandemic levels in its July 2021 earnings call.

DFW-CLE is also one of the top routes out of DFW/DAL that doesn't currently have any nonstop competition with NK having dropped DFW-CLE nonstop service through at least the end of its current flight schedule due to the COVID-19 pandemic whereas most of the other top AA domestic routes out of DFW have nonstop competition.

Is WN likely to re-add DAL-BOS/CLE/DTW/PHL nonstop service in its upcoming schedule extension on 9/16/2021, given that WN has more than enough room at DAL (due to other cuts that WN has already made on other routes out of DAL through the end of its current flight schedule) along with WN's plans to restore its route network?

I can understand your answer as demand to BOS/CLE/DTW/PHL from the DFW/DAL market was significantly down from pre-pandemic levels (through at least the end of March 2021).

Here were the PDEW's to BOS/CLE/DTW/PHL from DFW/DAL in Q1 2019:
DFW-BOS - 717
DAL-BOS - 108
DFW-CLE - 184
DAL-CLE - 37
DFW-DTW - 540
DAL-DTW - 82
DFW-PHL - 612
DAL-PHL - 69

Here were the PDEW's to BOS/CLE/DTW/PHL from DFW/DAL in Q1 2021:
DFW-BOS - 167 (down 76.7% from Q1 2019)
DAL-BOS - 9 (down 91.7% from Q1 2019)
DFW-CLE - 75 (down 59.2% from Q1 2019)
DAL-CLE - 13 (down 64.9% from Q1 2019)
DFW-DTW - 300 (down 44.4% from Q1 2019)
DAL-DTW - 19 (down 76.8% from Q1 2019)
DFW-PHL - 170 (down 72.2% from Q1 2019)
DAL-PHL - 14 (down 79.7% from Q1 2019)

While WN originally had planned on resuming daily DAL-BOS/DTW/PHL nonstop service and Sunday-only DAL-CLE nonstop service in 2020, I can understand WN having dropped plans to resume DAL-BOS/CLE/DTW/PHL nonstop service through at least the end of its current schedule due to significantly decreased demand that was there to BOS/CLE/DTW/PHL from the DFW/DAL market through at least 3/31/2021 (not just on WN but on other airlines) due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

WN actually carried more passengers on DAL-BHM/BNA/BWI/CHS/CLT/ECP/DEN/FLL/LAS/MCO/PHX/PNS/SLC/SJC/TPA nonstop flights in May 2021 than it did in May 2019.

I probably would expect the return of DAL-BOS/DTW nonstop service to happen at some point as BOS and DTW were two of the top destinations traveled to from DAL on WN that aren't currently served nonstop from DAL. WN also likely needs to re-add both of these routes to remain competitive in the Dallas/Fort Worth market once demand recovers.

I had also previously mentioned that WN is currently operating fewer daily departures out of DAL than it did prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.

On the heels of an announcement just this week that WN is reducing some flight schedules due to staffing issues, and a drop off in passenger numbers and revenue, they have to get their house in order. A large disgruntled workgroup/s and customer service and reliability issues are immediate issues that need attention. They have stated that advance bookings are strong through the holiday season, but they've got to fine tune the operation and "right the ship" so to speak now. Here it is a peak travel period approaching to close out the summer season, and yet the numbers show people have backed off travel for now due to Covid risks and in some cases pricing. I have 3 sets of friends totaling 8 people in PA and MD who have canceled traditional fall trips to FL by staying closer to home. The rise in the delta variant in FL and overall pricing for a week's vacation discouraged them, and they were flying WN and AA.
Unfortunately, we all are having to respond to and deal with further pandemic issues that will likely remain into 2022, so I'd see no rapid build up of new service into the first quarter. WN really has to fix its reputation with employees and customer alike quickly.

While WN hasn't yet re-added DAL-BOS/DTW nonstop service, the return of WN DAL-BOS/DTW nonstop service is a possibility as
(a) demand had returned on most of the WN nonstop routes that WN was operating out of DAL in June 2021,
(b) BOS and DTW were two of the top destinations traveled to from DAL on WN prior to the COVID-19 pandemic that aren't currently served nonstop from DAL,
(c) the station average load factor for WN at DAL in June 2021 was slightly higher than the station average load factor for WN at DAL in June 2019, with the station average load factor for WN at DAL being 85.10% compared to the 84.48% station average load factor that WN had at DAL in June 2019, and
(d) WN carried 1,279,467 passengers out of DAL in June 2021, which is 92.71% the amount of passengers that WN carried out of DAL in June 2019 (with WN having carried 1,380,114 passengers in June 2019).

Jplatts, you undoubtedly work for SWA and want them to expand, I get it. BUT…..SWA has limited resources and CAN’T do everything you want. Now to rebuff your thoughts…..
A) SWA has become a hub-and-spoke airline. Although your LF may be high, how many of those passengers are connecting from other flights.
B) Just because they were top destinations then, doesn’t mean that they are top destinations now!! Business travelers are not back
C) I point you to A.. hub-and-spoke. Funneling more passengers through DAL.
D) I point you again to A…. HUB-AND-SPOKE!! Plus all the fare sales!!
