Braniff. I loved them, everything about the forward-looking marketing (Halston, Pucci, Girard, et.al.) but never flew to where our family would vacation (Florida). Tried to price out DTW-DFW-TPA, alas my parents thought I was nuts.

Braniff, Hughes Airwest, and Western come to mind. My friends here in Seattle say Western was the best!

Virgin America. I've heard it's the best US airline.
I did fly on an ex-Virgin Alaska Airlines A320 though, MSY-SFO.
WOW Air seemed nice as well.

Aloha.

I actually very nearly booked a flight with them when planning a trip to Maui in 2005. Initially their nonstop SMF-OGG didn't appear significantly more expensive than the connecting services other airlines were offering, but after more searching I found a United fare for SMF-SFO-OGG that was significantly cheaper than everything else, so I booked that instead.

Braniff. My mother was a flight attendant for them well before I was born. She has told me many stories about the amazing service provided.

The other one I wanted to try was SilverJet, but they folded before I got the chance.

Midwest. Because COOKIES! Although the recipe is actually online on YouTube (assuming the video still exists).

Not a lot of good ways I could've flown with them living in AUS though. We had MCI with CR2 service but that was it. Not sure about connections.

That and maybe Virgin America.

Varig, Swissair and Midwest.

My friend actually gifted me a Varig blanket for my birthday one year. Midwest's original 717 configuration with the 88 seats was beautiful in pictures, I remember the KC Star did an article on the new jets serving San Antonio and Los Angeles.

VARIG hands down.

Hopefully I can head down to Porto Alegre next year to see PP-ANU. Not sure if one can get inside, though.

Ozark and TranStar, especially TranStar. I got to board one of their empty S80s in TPA in 1987 of a flight that cancelled due to maintenance. All the seats were light blue leather (or maybe lavender?) and it had a huge F cabin. The exterior of the jets were purple with a thin multi color swirl around the back of the fuselage. I think the flight was supposed to fly TPA-MSY-LAX.

Oh yes! SPANTAX, what a wonderful idea...
I am a big fan of all those, little and exotic charter airlines. Impossible to book, other than a week long holiday, and still a gamble if the plane showed up on the day of departure, like Peach Air, Nordic East, Air Ops, AirScandic, AV8 Air etc.!

South African Airways (are these guys actually dead?)

When in the Navy, I was stationed at Goodfellow AFB for a training school in 1980. Our name for TI was "Transportation Impossible". Always late, and virtually every sailor or Marine coming in for the school had to wait as long as three or four days to get their seabags.

They were not well-liked.

No no no. Trust me, you did NOT want to fly Air Berlin... I flew with them from Helsinki to Berlin to JFK. It was by far the worst two flight segments I ever had in my life. Seats were terribly cramped. Especially on the A330. IFE was so limited (I think like 6 English movies), and the food was terrible. Not to mention how awful it was connecting in Berlin. It was worse than the worst third world country i've been in... I was not sad to see them go.

I was quite pleased with my experience with Air Berlin. TXL was a terrible airport for sure, but despite the supposed 30" seat pitch on the A330, I did not perceive the seats to be cramped. I was more than satisfied with the food. As a matter of fact, the second meal I got shortly before arrival at JFK was unlike any other second meal I've received on a transatlantic crossing in economy class. It came with a sandwich AND a salad, plus a dessert and crackers & cheese. It was actually not that far off in terms of quality and quantity from what I received in Swiss business class on ZRH-BOS! Granted, when I flew on Air Berlin, it was when their relationship with Etihad was at its peak, so maybe that influenced their service levels a bit.

Olympic Airlines - for the nice tail
MALEV - because of 736
Borajet - they looked very exotic in Turkey, but the schedule of their flights to CKZ was beyond crazy even for me
Mandala - I love all airlines of Indonesia. Began travelling regularly in Indonesia too late to catch them
Batavia - same
Adam Air - same (and don't tell me about their safety record; I know it)
Aerolineas del Sur (Chile) - missed my chance in 2007. and that chance never came back...
LADE (Argentina) - as far as I understand, they are already closed.
TAM (Bolivia (Transporte Aereo Militar)) - the craziest fleet in the history of aviation

Now, I would like the topic "The airline I wish I had never flown". My entry for that is "Tiger"
