EK 216 Double diversion

Tue Sep 14, 2021 4:10 pm

I see EK216 from LAX-DXB has diverted to YYZ and then subsequently to LHR. Anybody know why it would divert twice? Crew scheduling?

First time: medical diversion
Second time: Crew were reaching their duty limit time.

I suppose LHR has plenty of capacity on onward flights. Alternatively, they could easily deadhead an extra crew there to take over and continue the flight without the pax having to get off.

LHR is a busy outstation for EK. If the schedule dictates it, not all airline crew are going to be on minimum rest assignments so this can open up outstation crew availability. If EK had a crew on a longer layover that was legal to fly it, it is possible that they might swap the two crews at LHR.

Another possible reason is with so many LHR-DXB flights, there was likely enough open seats departing LHR to accomodate the pax on the diverted flight.

In normal times completely agree, but how many passengers were there from LAX and how many flights does EK have currently daily to Dubai?

Such times are not so far away ... I have no knowledge of how many passengers were on the flight out of LAX, however currently EK operates 4xD on LHR DXB, 1x B77W + 3x A388.

LHRDXB is nearly always full.
UAE is as good as open for UK citizens now.
BA even going back 3 times a day for winter schedule .
