Which commercial aircraft manufacturer's flap system do you like best?

Fri Sep 17, 2021 10:05 pm

Some companies use flap hinges on their trailing edge flap system. Others use jackscrews. The Boeing 747 has an interesting cambered lead edge flap system. What do you think are the pros and cons of each?

DC-8. Slots instead of slats and "exhaust gates" on the flaps. Special!

For me the L-1011 flap system was good. Would get some Hyd switch can issues, but out on the wing was good.

Modern flaps are generally boring to look at from an Anutter perspective. My favourites from my own personal experience were BAC 1-11, L1011, 747, 757 & A300B4. I love the huge flap fairings on the B4. Have photo somewhere, takenfrom behind the wing while flying over the French Alps on a TransAer A300B4.

More slots than at a casino!

The classic 737 flaps had some character just by how noisy they were.

Funny! Two of my favorite 727 flap photos (both from Jon Proctors website):

The 727's flaps. Very distinctive and interesting.
All other flaps look the same IMO. I wouldn't call them boring because seeing them deploy and retract is still cool to see. They just all blend together.

The photos of the TWA 727 are beautiful, so thank you for sharing.

Favorites: L-1011, 747, 757, 727, DC-8

The 3/4 span flaps on Global Express and G-V are pretty nifty too.

Honorable mention: the C-5 and C-141

C-5 system is pretty simple set-up, slats and single-slot flaps. The Chug 14-1 didn’t have slats. The Global has slats, the Gulfstream uses flaps that extend off the chord line, the Global’s extend perpendicular to the flow. I never understood GLF’s lack of slats and using wing area to make up for their lack. They had a ground effect stall in the GIV program, then the crash in the G650 test. Slats effectively manage the wing flow and are both a performance and safety benefit. That said, the heavier Global needed all it trick stuff to match the GLF in some situations. It’s 5,000 pounds lighter, so where did they take out the weight? Slats, hydraulic flight controls 3, not 1, hydraulic system.

Both the -5 and -141 look incredible when it's all hanging out. I especially always liked how the -141s outboard was tapered and shorter than the inboard - saw a lot of 141s visiting NUQ as a kid. There's just something about big-Lockheed flap designs.

i have always loved sitting behind the winds of a 747 and see those flaps coming out. I guess I shall never witness that again :(

I always thought the big long wings on the GLF were more for long range cruise performance

Well, yes but also large wing area to make up for the lift that would have been achieved by more sophisticated high lift devices. High aspect ratios are good for range but not larger than necessary wetted areas.
