Not a pilot base for the type right now. Another base flying through or deadheading in possible but not likely. Maybe when the 772 draws down but not in the near future. Years not months IMO.

American Airlines 787-jfk

Anyone know when the 787 will be flying out of JFK. Heard it was very soon then was told it’s on hold for a while.

Thanks

No plans right now. AA seems to be doing well with the 777 exclusivity at JFK.

AA seems to be following a very strict plan regarding the 787s. Here in MIA, we didn't see them for quite a while. Now we're getting the 787-8, but looks like it will be quite some time before they bring in the 787-9.

Look at the Pilots Annual Bid for bases/equipment

If it is coming, it will be there months beforehand

Wouldnt surprise me now that JFK is back to King Tut for AA Europe flying for now :)

What are the 787 pilot bases for American? Im guessing DFW is the biggest base.

JFK is not currently a pilot / crew base for the 787. For now, the 777 is the standard equipment for JFK TATL, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, and Delhi service when that launches on 10/31. It was only in March 2019 that AA went all 777 for long haul international at JFK, replacing the 767-300ER that was operating JFK-CDG and JFK-MAD. While March 2019 is a century ago in terms of the current state of the airline industry, the switch to the 777 was not insignificant. It gave AA a consistent product on Europe, Deep South America routes for the first time, more cargo capacity, and all 777s had the premium economy cabin when the Spring / Summer 2019 season rolled out.

I have to think at some point, the 787 will come to JFK, particularly if AA shuffles some routes from, say PHL, to JFK, such as ZRH, which is rumored to be coming back to JFK, from where it left in 2015 to PHL. The 777 is too much plane for JFK-ZRH for AA, but the 787-8 would work very well. But one route won't cut it. AA would need more 787 routes out of JFK, or it would have to then shift planes from other hubs and rotate them through JFK, which isn't ideal. The other wildcard is whether AA puts some of the A321XLRs once they are delivered on some long thin routes across the Atlantic to JFK, but perhaps those may get assigned to PHL and MIA first. Maybe CLT too.

For now, the backbone of the JFK long haul, international operation (ATH, FCO, MXP, MAD, BCN when it resumes, CDG, LHR, TLV, DEL, EZE, GIG, GRU, SCL) will be the 777. AA has a 777 maintenance bay at JFK as well, simplifying the operation further.

Don't think we'll see 787s at JFK for some time.

DFW and ORD and PHL I think and that's it. 787s only recently began flying from MIA (2020 and into 2021) but not sure if MIA is a 787 pilot base. LAX maybe.

MIA seems to have regular 787 services especially on South American routes formerly served by 757 and 767 but I do not remember any announcement of the service starting

The 787 began regular service at MIA for AA in 2020 as a way to add both cargo and pax capacity to BGO, MDE, CLO, GYE, UIO, LIM, PAP, and SCL. The 787-8 is the version currently deployed to MIA.
