DC9 series- Which have you flown on?

Wed Sep 22, 2021 1:36 pm

We've basically only getting these threads for the classic Boeing planes we all know and love but why not go out on a limb and do Mcdonnell Douglas!

Since up until 2014, you could have flown on a DC-9-50 and up till 2011 you could fly DC-9-30s/40s with ease, that makes my list seem all the more pathetic. :(

AA, AC, DL, Ozark, Southern, EA, USAIR. From memory, I don’t keep any records and could not care less about what models, but probably all of them from the -14

As far as you can call it a DC9-series (it technically is), the only one I've ever flown is a Blue1 717. It was flying for SAS at the time.

Sorry, forgot to include that I flew on DL's 712s a few occasions. Crap, if only I could have flown on the DC-9-50, then I could have said I flew every DL DC-9 series airplane.

DC-9-10, -30, -50 for me. Mostly Northwest, Usair, Air Tran, SAS, and the original DL DC-9s prior to their retirement in 1992.

I used to love the NW -10s. Sporty!

I don’t consider the MD-80s, -90, or the 717 a derivative of the DC-9. I’ve flown on many of those, too.

Eight American MD-80s, although one was a result of a cancelled United 757 flight. Flight was half empty.

I'm my opinion, if we're going to count the 737 Jurassic, Classic, NG, and Max as one family, then the DC-9, MD-80, 90, and 717 should be treated the same way.

I guess you could say they’re in the same family, but I still don’t consider those newer planes a DC-9. Especially the relatively modern 717 with completely different engines, modern avionics, and fly by wire controls as opposed to cables and hydraulics. Even MD-80s, aside from the -88 was old school with steam gauges. The -88 was the only -80 that had somewhat improved modern (late 1980s avionics) with partial glass screens and FMC.

I was on tour in the United States with British rocker Hugh Cornwell in 2009 or 2010 and we had a day off between Chicago and Winnipeg, so I booked a bunch of DC-9 flights on Delta, who were retiring the type. Chicago to Detroit DC-9-50, Detroit back to Chicago DC-9-40, Chicago to Minneapolis DC-9-50, Minneapolis to Winnipeg DC-9-30, which was exactly what turned up. Have to say I was impressed. Really fun day out. And beat the bus to Peg City by 19 hours.

Went to Kenya to fly on a few Jurassics more recently, took African Express from Dubai to Mogadishu via Berbera on an ex Alitalia MD-80 (with the cockpit jumpseat into Moga), connecting on the tarmac to an ex Iberia DC-9-30 to Nairobi via Wajir. Next day we flew Nairobi to Kisumu and back on African Safari’s DC-9-10.

Spanair, SAS, and American MD-80's. Not sure which variant, though I'm pretty sure that the AA flight I took was on an MD-82.

For those that were fortunate to fly a variety of airline/equipment combos, were there any experiences that stood out from the rest?

To me, the American Airlines MD-82/83s were the absolute classic essence of what the Mad Dog family was. Simply by numbers, scale , & longevity. And that til the end, AA kept them in the classic 80s/90s interiors. These accounted for 75% of all my DC-9 flights.

Another standout were the original “sweet 16” Delta MD-90 with the drop-down LCDs, which were advanced for their time. This rare variant only ever flew to SLC from ORD (my hometown airport), so I made sure in 2007 to find myself on that routing to nab it.

Mesa/US Airways I'm fairly sure.

Qantas/Turkmen 717s - many times. I've flown 2x Qantas 717s this week alone. And am booked on Hawaiian's later in the year.
