Lockheed L-1011 - Whose have you flown?

Thu Sep 30, 2021 9:04 pm

If you have flown on a Lockheed L-1011, whose have you flown?

I can't remember which variants, but I have flown on Delta and ATA L-1011s. I remember they didn't have center bins, so they probably were not L-1011-500s. I also remember the old-fashioned text-based "No Smoking" and "Fasten Seat Belt Signs", plus a third illuminated "Life Vest Under Seat" sign. One of the ATA L-1011s had them in both English and Japanese.

Growing up in Florida the 90's, you were hard-pressed to not avoid DL L10's to/from ATL.

Also flew it on DL MCO-SJU in my youth, my first memory of flying on it if I recall. I do remember the FA's going up and down that galley elevator.

I had just the one return trip on a Tristar - LGW-NAP-LGW with British Airtours. It was an all economy charter configuration with very few bulkheads to divide up the cabin and I remember being amazed at how vast the cabin was.

I have not. Only widebody jets I've ever been on are the Boeing 747-400 and the Boeing 777-200ER.

Delta is the only airline whose L1011’s I have flown on, and many many many times, but some of those were ex-PanAm and ex-Eastern birds. My dad was a Delta Captain on L1011, so also rode on some birds when he was doing the flying.

ATA, several trips from DFW to CZM and LAS. Delta, from DFW to FTL and TPA, last flight was about a week before the type was retired. Really miss this incredible aircraft.

EA, DL and AC. There were two thoroughly derelict L-1011s on the ramp at El Alamein Egypt parked next to us. Often wondered who had owned them and why were they abandoned there.

BA and Cathy, the latter with the added treat of coming into Kai Tak.
Plus plenty of time (BA) in the hangar, first engine run included.

Mother worked for EA and we pass rode often down to the US Virgin Islands. Flew many EA L-1011’s on the BDL-BOS-SJU route, along with the short lived “Trans-con” JFK—SFO, several hops between MIA and NAS, and JFK-MEX-ACA as well. I think I ended up on either #329 or #323 the most, but flew aboard many of the L10’s in the fleet. Awesome plane...I can still picture the big stain-glass sun bulkhead in first class...and hear the sounds of those engines on takeoff.

Apparently I am the only one here who flew the PanAm 500s. I also flew them after United acquired them, along with PanAm’s Pacific routes. I’ve also flown TWA, Eastern, and Delta 1011s. I liked it better than the DC 10.

1978 Eastern L1011-1 MCO-ATL N*****
1985 TWA L1011-100 SLC-DEN-SLC N31031 and N31013
1991 Delta L1011-1 SLC-LAX-HNL-LAX-SLC N728DA and N720DA
1993 Delta L-1011-1 SLC-SAN-HNL-LAX-SLC N714DA and N720DA

Both return flights from HNL were same flight number 1562 and same ship 720 two years apart, just coincidence LOL. Loved flying on the L10, felt well built and smooth. That engine growl on start up and take off is great!
Anybody wondering about the TWA flights, DEN-SLC was a late night tag on to JFK-DEN with a morning return the same way.
