For pilots: Was the DC-10 a joy to fly?

Mon Oct 11, 2021 3:52 pm

As a passenger, I always enjoy my flights on the DC-10-10 and the DC-10-30. Not sure how many DC-10/MD-10 pilots are on the Forums, but I was wondering whether pilots enjoyed flying it?

It's a pretty good handling honest airplane. You might find responses from L1011 pilots who like the Lockheed better. Most pilots like the planes they fly regularly. The one plane I flew, a lot, that I didn't like was the EMB-110 Bandit. Hunk of junk.

When I moved from the 727 to the DC-10 I thought it was a roomy, easy to fly, predictable jet. Much easier to land than the 727. After I went to the MD-11 I was so used to the sensitivity of the the controls that the MD-10 felt sluggish and yet it was just a DC-10. You always get used to what you're currently flying.

CosmicCruiser,
I am not quite sure what you mean by "sluggish" when referring to the controls on the MD-10 [DC-10]. Do you mean the rudders, ailerons and speed brakes were slower to respond to your control inputs than the controls of the MD-11?. Sorry I am not a pilot.

That enormous horizontal stabiliser made it as steady as a rock to hand fly. Approach to landing was like on rails. Incredibly forgiving, flattering. Also good level of automation for a three crew cockpit. Enough to make the job a lot easier, never too much to manage. Autothrottles especially — simple to select mode and to know which mode you're in. Definitely some design shortcomings but not in the cockpit or the aerodynamics / flight controls.

A DC-10 is cables/pullies/bell cranks and an MD-11s has lots more "augmentation" like LSAS, so computerization.

As a friend who “plumbed” the -10 at AA said, “a deadhead between pre-flights”.

The EMB-110 was a fine example of a first-generation third-world airliner. I loaded and dispatch many Bandit's & Brasilias for EV @ DFW back in the day.
