Sydney Opens Up to Travellers

Fri Oct 15, 2021 12:07 am

Just announced by the New South Wales Premier, Sydney will welcome all vaccinated and tested travelers from Nov 1 without quarantine (source: https://www.news.com.au/world/coronavir ... 900c103566). Hotel Quarantine will still apply to unvaccinated travelers, and does not apply to other destinations in Australia (yet). Great news for Sydney, and it will be interesting to see what airlines start to operate again!

It will be just as interesting to see loads, as many pre-Covid airlines have continued operating to SYD. NZ, AC, AN, JL, SQ, EK, QR, CZ, CA, CX, MA, DL, UA, FJ, LA and a couple of other Hainan Group airlines all have near daily (some daily+) flights already, with few or no passengers.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves here.

It is still for Australians only, and must be double-vaccinated with an approved Covid vaccine. Business travellers, no. Students, no. etc. etc. However it is good for Australia to be back on the path to normality!

Keep reading the news, this only applies to AU citizens. Foreigners are still banned from entry into Australia. Only the federal government can change that, not some territorial or state Premier, and the PM has already stated they have no intention of reversing course.

At first. Successfully allowing citizens and PRs to travel is an easy first stepo to reopening to fully vaccinated, negative PCR test within 72 hours of flight tourists.

Some cruise lines have already pulled their ships that were supposed to sail in the first three months of 2022 off the schedule since they don't expect AU and NZ to open up anytime soon.

I suspect they'll find themselves blindsided by the speed of change now NSW has passed 80% vaccination for 16+ and Victoria is getting close. I think NSW residents themselves are blindsided, and it does seem that 90%+ vaccination rate is a likelhy outcome.

If we see no significant growth in case numbers across November and December I wouldn't be surprised if some level of further opening happens by February. That said, I fully expect full vaccination and clear PCR test to remain in place throughout 2022 at least.

Another problem is that most Australian cruises also include New Zealand. Ardern seems to want to turn New Zealand into the Hermit Kingdom Pt 2.

New Zealand's vaccination program started later than most other countries, with first dose now only just above 70%. although fully vaxxed is over 50%. The Auckland outbreak has forced the government to face the uncomfortable truths seen in parts of Australia. Once vaccination is above 80% I'd expect the pressure to reopen will be very great.

It will be nice to return to he near domestic travel arrangements with NZ, and it was pleasing that travel fomr the South Island to Australia no longer requires quarantine on arrival.
