Potential US Airline Mergers?

Mon Oct 18, 2021 12:14 am

What are some potential mergers that might happen in the US airline market?

Here are some I can think of:

B6/AA
AS/AA
SY/XP
WN/SY
F9/NK

Probably none. Although I will play the game.

DL/AS - yes they are not friends but makes the most sense for both
F9/NK - probably only one possible

NK/F9 makes no sense.

Legacies merged because they had hub structures, and combining hubs creates a better national network. LCC don’t really have hubs, and thus they don’t gain anything by merging.

Just asking, for what reasons will this work? I'm only asking, not trying to conjecture against your argument or whatever. I simply thought that the legacy 3 (and maybe WN) are done merging for a while. I thought that if they merged with someone again it would be an automatic monopoly.

I am not sure why a.netters would be keen on airlines in the USA merging. This is a fairly mature market and unlikely to see a lot of new companies starting up and gaining significant market share in a hurry
Employees will lose out (ie layoffs) and any new large airline will have greater pricing power and thus raise fares.

The main people to gain would be investors

No way on DL/AS imho…. Would give them 90% of SEA and very little competition on many routes there. LAX would be interesting as well. But, hey, one never knows!! I have been wrong before…..

AA/DL/UA best merger. Keeps the LCC from completing. And best for investors.

I don't think any merger will happen as I said in my post, but if they eliminate each other as competition and probably would have to give up something in Seattle to make it happen but sets up a really strong situation in Seattle and LA for Delta.

Or hope dies last.

Not happening, but here's my 2 cents.
