How many airports did you fly from around your place of residence?

Fri Oct 29, 2021 12:23 am

Using ground transportation between the airport and your place of residence.

From one city I've lived in, I used ground transportation to 8 airports around and then flew from there.

I have one airport offering RPT service within one hour of my place of residence via ground transport (SYD). The destinations from the next nearest, 90 minutes away, are also available more quickly and cheaper from the nearest. The third nearest with RPT is served from the first by air.

How many did I fly from as me the pilot.....rentals from KCXO and KDWH far too many to recall.

As a passenger, KIAH in the last 37 years few with DL, PI and most on CO with then UA post merger....with two other flights during that time from KEFD on mileage/segment run...and two from KHOU not since 1987 on TranStar. Yes, I am that old and wouldn't trade a second of it to be young again!!

If you want to count any airport which I flew out of after taking solely ground transportation from my current home in London - then 34 different airports. The list would be even longer if you include airports where I travelled out by train and flew home

As a passenger in my home area, I have flown out of SJC, OAK, and SFO too many times to count - in the several hundreds. SFO likely the most times.

As a GA passenger/student/pilot in my home area, I have flown out of/into LVK, RHV, PAO, SQL, HWD, HAF, CCR, OAK, WVI, Q99 (now E16), MRY, CVH, SNS, STS and APC. Throughout California probably between 75 and 100 airports. In my home area I have also been on the airfield at NUQ multiple times but never in an aircraft.

My home airport HAM is easily reached by public transport within 40', so I usually fly from there. Otherwise I took trains or busses (but never a car, I don't own one) between home and LBC, BRE, HAJ, TXL, SXF, FMO, DTM, DUS, CPH, MUC (the old one at Riem) to fly to/from there.

how come they are so much? because of available non-stop connection, better flying times, better fare?

how do you do your flight search? You put the whole country of "UK" into Skyscanner or kiwi.com?

Sometimes it's due to the cheaper fare, sometimes better timings, sometimes route simply not available from London, and sometimes because I can't face flying again with Ryanair from Stansted
Flight search - I use a combination of Wikipedia's airport pages, Google's "Show me all flights from XXX airport" search and FR24

Living in London where there is extensive public transport and quite a selection of easily accessible airports those I have travelled to directly from home using only land transport are: LHR, LGW, LCY, LTN, STN, SOU, BRS and BHX.

ok for these kind of flight searches i prefer kiwi. You can put in multiple countries and airports and multiple dates and get one single list of flights.

Image

https://www.kiwi.com/us/search/results/ ... /no-return

The flight itself can be booked on that website or directly at the airline ^^

I live in Kaunas, Lithuania; therefore, there are 5 reasonable options: VNO (Vilnius), KUN (Kaunas), PLQ (Palanga), RIX (Riga, Latvia), WAW/WMI (Warsaw, Poland)
KUN is 15km away, very cheap public bus (under 1 USD), inexpensive taxi (30min ride). Only LOT and lowcosts fly here. I used LOT twice for returning and once for departing
VNO is 100 km away (under 2h by convenient public transport). my airport of choice (almost inevitably). dozens and dozens of flights
RIX is 260 km away (4h30min by bus). only makes sense for Air Baltic flights (which don't interest me). used it once for Air Baltic, and onbce it was cheaper to return by Turkish when I bought a ticket a few days before the flight. for my needs, flights from Vilnius are cheaper.
WAW is 390km away (7h30 by bus, similarly by train - if there is any). used it eight times - for Emirates, Aegean and for a charter. a very nice choice for some specific destinations. love it. sadly, it's so far... when we get a fast railway there in a few years, WAW will probably be my first choice
WMI (Warsaw Modlin; 400km away) used it once for my only Ryanair flight when I was on a very tight budget
KRK is 700km away. (train+ bus is at least 13 hours to get home) used it only was when I was on a low budget and had to return from MAN (my only flight on Easyjet)
TOTAL: 6 airports for me to start/finish trips
-----------
airports which are close and which I never use
MSQ (Minsk, Belarus; only 4 hrs by train, very convenient to get there) - but I need a visa to get there; flights are more expensive than Vilnius
PLQ (Palanga) is 245km away; 3h40 min by very convenient public transport, but they have only SAS, AirBaltic and lowcosts there. I would only use SAS, but they are always far more expensive there than from Vilnius. when I used it last time, I was a toddler, and Brezhnev still was in power
SZY (Olsztyn, Poland) should be about 300 km (never cared to check), very VERY inconveniently located (for me), and only LOT. I can get them cheaper in Vilnius or Kaunas (when they return to Kaunas after covid)
(yet these three airports at least have a slim chance)
everything else is out of reach even for such an adventurous person as me

I live in Fort Collins, CO.

Nearest commercial airport is FNL. But I’ve never flown from there. Ditto CYS to the north.

Only ever use DEN.

Growing up in the West Country (near Plymouth), before BRS became a large hub for LCCs, I was used to long overland trips to reach an airport. At the most extreme, LHR was 4-5 hours by road and LTN / LGW / STN 5-6 hours. Some 'fun' childhood memories there, airports reached overland from that region include:

BHX, BOU, BRS, CWL, EMA, EXT, GLO, LTN, LGW, LHR, NQY, PLH, PZE and STN

Now I live next to LGW, which is far more convenient. That said, I've still driven all over the place to reach airports to take specific flights:

BBH, BRS, BHX, CWL, EMA, HLY, KRH, LCY, LHR, LGW, LTN, MAN, OXF, SEN, STN

Plus plenty of small airstrips to fly in bug smashers

When I lived in Bakersfield, and in the remarkably few times I flew, it was either LAX or BFL, and if it was LAX, it was usually a family member driving to & from. Occasionally I'd do it myself and pay for parking. Only once did I use the Airport Bus of Bakersfield, which I don't even know if it still exists.

Since living in San Diego (from 1999), I have only ever used SAN and the occasional LAX. But when starting a trip at LAX, I use Amtrak to Union Station and then the FlyAway shuttle. And that's ONLY if it's a late afternoon departure.

Let's see, from my home in the Netherlands I've driven to these airports to fly from there:

- Amsterdam
- Cologne-Bonn
- Eindhoven
- Groningen
- Weeze

So that's five airports. There are more airports in the area but I've never flown from them.

From these airports I've flown direct to the following destinations:

From Amsterdam:
- Faro
- Gran Canaria
- Heraklion
- Lanzarote
- Malaga
- Palma de Mallorca
- Stockholm Arlanda
- Venice

From Cologne-Bonn:
- Gran Canaria

From Eindhoven:
- Copenhagen
- Dublin
- Katowice
- Lanzarote
- Pisa
- Reus
- Tenerife South
- Vienna

From Groningen:
- Gdansk

From Weeze:
- Lanzarote
- London Stansted
- Milan Bergamo
- Tenerife South

I lived in Cincinnati during the Delta height. Fares were high. I would regularly drive to Louisville, Lexington, and Dayton. Sometimes I would go farther to Columbus and Indianapolis.

Now I live in Los Angeles. I’ve flown out of all the usual suspects: Long Beach, Burbank, Orange County, and Ontario.

I'm in the suburbs of Sacramento, so 99% of the time I use SMF. A small number of times I've taken the train to the Bay Area and flown out of SFO or OAK.

If we can count non-commercial flights, I flew out of MHR many times when I worked for Intel and flew on their corporate shuttle. And once out of SAC for a flightseeing flight on a Ford Trimotor.

I guess that totals up to 5 airports.

Central New England, mostly out of KBDL, only click, but in the past used KPVD. For business, BDL, JFK, EWR and BOS. International positioning to meet the plane, 90% limo to JFK, rarely EWR. EWR to go SQ to SIN.

When I lived in Santa Cruz, CA, I flew from SFO and SJC.
When I lived in Huntsville, AL, I flew mostly from HSV and once from ATL; I did connect/direct flights through BNA, MEM, BHM also
When I lived in St Louis, MO, I flew mostly from STL, once from BLV (to fly Allegiant), once from MCI (to fly Midwest); Connected through ORD (mostly) for international flights.
When in San Diego, I have only flown via SAN; I also have done LAX, SNA but those were for getting to the LA area instead of San Diego

As far as RPT airports are concerned. Where I live (Brisbane outter north) there is one primary airport, and two defacto secondary airports within a two hour drive, with a further two just outside the two hour boundary.

Brisbane (BNE) is my primary airport about 30 minutes from where I live.

Sunshine Coast (MCY), and Gold Coast (OOL) are respectively 60 minutes, and 90 minutes away. They both have their own primary markets so I wouldn't necessarily call them secondary airports, but I have used both as secondary airports before. Both have less flight options than BNE, and generally similar fares and parking costs as BNE so I almost always fly in/out of BNE which is much more convenient for me. Even my sister who lives quite close to MCY will usually drive down to BNE for the better flight options.

The two just outside the two hour drive mark are Toowoomba/Wellcamp (WTB) and Ballina (BNK) both around 2.25 hours. Both have very few flight options compared to the closer airports so I have never used them and I doubt I ever will. BNK has also been off limits during the COVID-19 pandemic as it's been on the wrong side of a state border closure for most of the time.

There are also a few GA airports around the area. Redcliffe (YRED), Caboolture (YCAB), Caloundra (YCDR) and Brisbane/Archerfield (YBAF) But I don't fly, so they are irrelevant to me.

I live in a sprawling metropolis with many little aviation airports (greater Los Angeles) and I have only used ground transportation to 3 airports to fly to/from.

WOW, Conquest Airlines and their B190C model. I believe they also began flying SW4's near the end of their operation. Remember working them in and out of KSGR in the early to mid 90's.

From our home, FLL is the closest airport, however PBI and MIA are roughly equidistant. I'll check all 3 when planning flights.

It might be a UK (plus Europe) thing but my list is:
MME, LBA, NCL, MAN, LHR, LGW, DSA, LPL, EMA, BRS, BHX, GLA, EDI, GCI, AMS, LIL.

Took the tunnel one way and back via plane a few times (Hence AMS and LIL) and I have done a boat one way and flown back from GCI.

I came to San Diego for school around the same time you did (2000). As a broke college kid frequently visiting family (thankfully, in ATL), I looked for the best fares... Either taking Amtrak, bumming rides, etc. I have flown out of the following:

SAN
SNA (most frequent secondary),
LGB (when JetBlue had service)
ONT
LAX, and
BUR

...Yup. I've departed from San Diego from 6 different airports, all within 100nm.

I think that could be the most commercial airports in the nation within 100nm (even exceeding the NY and DC area).

Even with SNA, SAN, and LAX: These were rarely non-stop flights!

EDIT: I forgot TIJ. So that's 7 airports I've departed from via ground transportation, from my residence (although that's in Mexico)

Not my residence per se, but when going to visit my parents who live in Sedona, Arizona, I have had them pick me up from: PHX, FLG, PRC, AZA, GCN, LAS, and SCF. Likewise for visiting family in Quebec's Eastern Townships, I use YUL, PBG, ALB, BTV, BOS, MHT, PWM, YQB, even YFC once; hope someday I can actually take a flight into YSC.

When my wife was living in San Diego, I used SAN, TIJ, CLD, MYF and LAX to see her.

Living in London or Cambridge I have used: LHR, LGW, STN, LTN, LCY, SEN, LPL, SOU, MAN, GLA
Living in Dublin I have used: DUB, BFS, BHD, LDY, WAT, ORK, NOC, SNN, NNR (all by the excellent bus system or rail)
Living in Vienna I have used: VIE, BTS, LNZ (wish I'd gotten GRZ)
Living in Shenzhen I have used: SZX, HKG, HUZ, CAN (also used ZUH for Shenzhen but not when living there)
Living in Shanghai I have used: SHA, PVG, WUX (wish I'd gotten NTG and YTY)
Living in Boston I have used: BOS, BED, HYA, PWM, BDL (wish I'd gotten PSM and ORH)

I live 6 miles from Dulles, so the majority of my commercial flights have been out of there, but I've also taken ground transport to DCA and BWI for flights (even wrote a TR many years ago that started with my Metro trip to DCA).

I've also done GA flights out of JYO, GAI, FDK, and even CXY once if you'll count a ~115 mile drive as 'local'

Living in the Toronto and Hamilton area, I've flown out of YYZ, YTZ, BUF and DTW. Haven't used YHM, YKF or IAG yet. Loved flying out of BUF when I used to live 1 hour away since parking and security was a breeze. The waiting time at the border has always been reasonable for me.

Negative, I moved to Orlando back in July of 2017, therefore from that point, the nearest airport that I would get to via ground transportation would, in fact, be MCO.

Although now that I think about it, yes, I could have gotten to MCO via ground transportation from New York. Get a Penske truck, move my parents' furniture from old house to new house, then drive to MCO to fly back up to New York. This was prior to me moving down there.

I've got AUS if I want to catch a flight anywhere or flight training (phew).

EDC I also fly out of if doing leisure or flight training.

SAT is also an option if I want to catch a cheap flight to Mexico, although I have only ever done that once. However, I've made that trek several times dropping off/picking up relatives in recent years regardless.

I've commuted to LGA/EWR/JFK a few years ago but for a looong time, mostly from BOS. One time, I couldn't get there on anybody, so I went to DTW and jumped to SWF thinking okay at least I'm near New York. Yeah... I was new... that's not New York. Getting to the crashpad probably cost more than the crashpad.

If you want to count any airport which I flew out of after taking solely ground transportation from my current home in London - then 34 different airports. The list would be even longer if you include airports where I travelled out by train and flew home

You win.

I live in a sprawling metropolis with many little aviation airports (greater Los Angeles) and I have only used ground transportation to 3 airports to fly to/from.

Wow, no friends who do GA? I have never lived in SoCal, but have been fortunate to fly GA out of VNY, SMO, EMT, POC and CMA.

I live in ALB and for me it goes:
ALB: for 90% of travels
BDL: for cheaper tickets or flights to places ALB doesn't have
EWR/JFK: TATL or long hauls
BOS: TATL or long hauls

I live 15mins from BOS - have used PVD and have used JFK. Despite BOS having a great selection of international flights the fares at JFK make a big enough difference for the trip to be worth it (more so for Asia and sometimes Europe) MHT used to be a popular option for people in BOS as well. They’ve fallen far from the days of 757s to ORD and a busy southwest operation. Never flown out of ORH or BDL but both are close enough that I would in the mright circumstance.
