What are your favorite planes that you've flown on?

Fri Oct 29, 2021 3:28 pm

For me, it's:
1) Boeing 787
2) Boeing 777
3) Airbus A330
4) MD-80
5) Avro RJ-100
6) Embraer E-Jets
7) Bombardier CRJ-900
8) Bombardier CRJ-1000
9) Embraer 145
10) Boeing 737

Yes, I like Regional Jets. Except the CRJ-200.
I'd also love to go on a 747, 757, 767, or A380 one of these days, as well as newer jets like the Embraer E2, A220, or A350.

747, taken me all over the world. Comfortable aircraft and for me especially the A zone in business, I even prefer that over the upper deck.

Yep, being able to look forward was something special.

A close 2nd would be the Concorde, noisy sure, not that comfortable sure, but still, so special.

Any aircraft type that allows me to sit by the window AND allows me to be no more than one seat away from the aisle (in Economy class). For long haul flights, that would be the 767 and most A330/A340s. For short haul, it's less important, but I think I would choose to take an A220 or E-Jet over a 737 or A320.

E175 , A332, B788. I'd love to fly the 767 but unlikely to get the chance. Looking forward to fly the A220 in the next year.

For me, anything from the E170/175/190/195 family or DC-9 family (DC-9/ MD-80 / MD-90 / 717). I also think for long-haul flights nothing can beat the 767 for comfort in the back.

I know quite a bit about the DC-6 (Despite nevera having flown on It), and it's honestly underrated.
The A330 was my favorite for a while. 2-4-2 seating is fantastic, and that wing view is great.

That window-aisle configuration is one thing I miss on the 787 and will miss on the A330neo and A350 (whenever I fly on them). I agree on short haul being less important, and I don't mind an A319 over an E175 (a bit more spacious), but I also think it's a nicer ride (as seen by my ranking)

That "special" factor is why I like the RJ-100 and MD-80 so much, and probably why the 747 and Concorde are so popular, even among non-avgeeks.

Great choices! Honestly, 1-2 years ago I would've considered the E175 more forgettable (I associate It with those 60-90 minute flights before one on a larger mainline jet), but now, as you can see, I'm a fan of it.

While it's not on the list, I'm also a fan of the CRJ700. Very comfortable, especially when compared to the -200.
As for the Cessnas, I get the high wing modelos confused, but they're great training aircraft.

From a pure comfort perspective

-Airbus A330-200/300
- Airbus A350-900
- Airbus A380-800
- Embraer 170/190

From a fun to fly perspective

- Boeing 717-200
- DHC-6-300 Twin Otter
- Dash 8-100/200/300/400
- Fokker 70/100

From a special aircraft perspective

- Boeing 727-200 (Glad I managed to fly on one as a kid before they were retired
- Boeing 747-300/400/400ER (Goes without saying)
- Boeing 757-200 (To be honest it felt just like a longer 737, but still happy I got the chance to fly on one)

Can you tell I have a hard time picking favourites...

The strange thing is each time I fly on a 737 (especially an -800 series) I know they're not particularly exciting, I can't help but feel a comforting sense of familiarity.

Planes I've Worked on as Flight Crew:

1. 9L Saab 340
2. C5 Dash 8 Q300

Planes I've Been a Passenger on:

1. AA MD-80
2. XE E145XR
3. WN 737-200
4. UA 777-200

Most of my favorites are planes from my childhood or career as a flight crew. Usually, they are the planes that were always bringing me home to LIT.

From a comfort in Y perspective:
1. 767
2. A330 and A340 (I'm lumping them together since the cabin configuration is pretty much the same in Y)
3. 777 in a 2-5-2 layout, as long as I get a seat in one of the groups of 2.
4. E175

From a purely "I think this plane is cool" perspective:
1. 747-400
2. A380
3. MD-80/90 (With the 5 across seating this could go in the previous category as well)
4. E-120
5. BAe-146

DC3 tops, the first plane I flew on, followed by a few other flights in passenger configuration, plus the most memorable flight of all in the right hand front seat, of ZK AWO converted for single person operation, for dropping fertiliser on to rugged hill country sheep pasture.

3 drop runs at 500 nominal feet above the steep hilly pasture, making the sheep run, punctuated by hourglass 180 turns. And at the end of the exercise being instructed to put my head out the window to check the hopper was discharged. I think that was a tryout. 40 minutes round flight.
I was offered the same seat for its final flight ever, a ferry flight back to base as the airframe had run out of remaining time till next major inspection and no more engines were available to keep the entire fleet going.

But next, a flight on a Lake LA 4 Amphibian.
Sea take off, and then landing at an international airport, Wellington.

And first helicopter flight in a bubble canopy Bell 47.

And another near aerobatic flight, doors off, in a Hughes 500, pilot and aircraft normally used for live capture of wild deer in NZ southern mountains.
Very nearly got reunited with my previous meal on that one.

Tandem parapant of a mountain where ideal conditions allowed a half hour flight and landing about 100m away from where we had taken off from.

787 for long flights, definitely. The A350 might be a contender, I've only been on it once and it was a nice flight.

No real opinion for short flights.

I do have to give an honorable mention to the 757 out of SNA. The full throttle, standing start takeoffs were great.

Mother worked for EA....some awesome L-1011 flights. I also loved jumping all over Europe aboard the TU-154. But chugging back and fourth between SJU and STT on those Aero Virgin DC-3’s....that was fantastic!!! Looking out a square window down a few thousand feet to blue water and visible reefs, while listening to the rumble of those radial engines on that all-original classic airliner...

Don't worry, I also have a hard time picking favorites most of the time. I'd say that from the ones I've been on, the 787, A330, E-Jets, E145, MD-80, and A320 series win for comfort. I'd have fun to fly and special as one category, which would have the 777, Avro RJ-100, and MD-80. Also the 747, which I've been on at museums, but not flown on (yet).
I've heard from many about the 757 being similar to the 737 on the inside, but I would also be excited to fly on one.

A few years back I flew in an Airbus A380, from Netherlands to Canada.

That thing felt massive from the inside and had pretty good amenities.

Would love to fly again in one.

A lot of my favorite aviation memories are tied to the trip as a whole. So, if I was traveling for pleasure or for an amazing trip, I generally have fonder recollections of the flights involved. So, with that in mind, I have a lot of good memories of the DC-10 and MD-11 (hence the username). Also always enjoyed flying on the 767.

Born in 1975 and flew a lot when I was younger:

When I was young in the mid 80's it was

DL 737-200 (732)
Super 80 AA ( MD-80 series)
DL 737-300 (733)
727 (722)

Planes that I'm glad I was on once and and didn't realize how cool it was at the time;

Shorts 330 (AA Eagle) LGA-BOS, the flying toaster.
A Pan Am A300 Bahamas to MIA.
Hawaiian DC-8 Combo, with only back door stair boarding from OAK-HNL.
Flying KOA-OGG (Maui) and looking out the window and seeing the Aloha 732 miracle flight plane sitting on the tarmac with a tarp over the front 1/4 of the plane.
AA 757 KOA-LAX, Capitan said it was brand new a had its first flight 2 days ago.

Forgot to add, America West 747, PHX-HNL, the Bird of Paradise, Had a 5 hour delay and its wasn't a great memory, but it was the only 747 I was ever on. (742 or 747-200)

And Rich International Airways L-1011 charter flight form DFW-HNL with a tech stop in ONT, they were grounded within the year for bad safety practices, enjoyed the flight, love the L 1011.

The DC-10 got a bad rap, it was a nice plane.

717 is a great plane too.

Want to fly but have never been on a 777,787, A330, A340, A380 and all the other new planes.

My absolute favorite plane to fly is a Grumman Tiger. As for airliners...

1) 747-8
2) 747-400
3) 747SP
4) 747-200
5) 747-100

I think you get the idea.

I've also enjoyed flying on 757s, L1011s, 717s, MD80s, EMB120s, EMB145s, EMB170-195s, Cessna Caravans, BN Islander and BAe-146/Avro RJ.

Northwest DC-10-40s, never forget those flights in and out of SEA, the engines spooling up, big cabin, lovely flight attendants. Plus the bowling shoe livery.

Short-haul: E190/195 is the favorite hands down. The others I've flown (A320 family and B737 family especially) are OK but will hardly wow anyone.

Long-haul: B763 and A332 are definitely the best for the economy class passenger and it's pretty much a coin toss between those, but I'll go with the B763 as I also had the chance to travel J twice on it and those were very special trips. I always loved the B77W as a groundbreaking machine but a very unconfortable plane when it comes to it's economy class.
