Sunwing Dropping Flights, offering credits instead

Fri Nov 05, 2021 4:27 pm

So it seems that Sunwing has decided to cancel some southern destinations during the next month or so, but is only offering credits to fully paid bookings. Several different customers were interviewed by Global News, and claim they were informed by Sunwing to re-book with other airlines but you will have to pay the price difference. Destinations cancelled for now include St. Lucia and Antigua. At least five different requests by Global News to Sunwing asking for an explanation have gone unanswered.

I am beginning to think we may have a red flag here, a sign of problems perhaps ?

Sunwing has been very quiet during the pandemic, I haven't heard much of anything from them. There were rumours, even before Covid, that the Hunter's were mulling shutting down the airline and turning their focus on the hotels, packages & destinations side of things, they are first and foremost a travel company after all. They are taking on additional aircraft this winter, but I'm not sure how many. Their permanent fleet stands a 18 and the first aircraft from TUI, C-FYUY, arrived last week for the winter season.

With that said, Antigua and St. Lucia both require a negative PCR test within 4 and 5 days of arrival respectively. Bookings may have been low due to this reason with many other popular Caribbean destinations having no restrictions or testing requirements for fully vaccinated travellers. Still, those people booked should have a choice of a full refund or a future travel credit, that has been the standard across all the major airlines in Canada throughout the pandemic.

UVF and ANU are both higher-end Caribbean destinations. Sunwing would be selling many fewer packages to these destinations than say PUJ for example.

What am I missing? It said in the article that Sunwings offered her a full refund to her original form of payment. Then next paragraph it says they only offered a credit.

Is this post even factually accurate?

This is off-topic, but it's not looking good... Sunwing Group failed to pay hotels in the DR:
