Who Here Has Flown on Both the 753 and 764?

Sat Nov 27, 2021 6:03 pm

I ask this question because both the 753 and 764 are pretty rare birds. I think Boeing only produced 50 or so of each model. The CASM of both planes was excellent but each seemed to suffer from poor timing when entering the market.

I have only flown on the 764 once from SLC-ATL. Very comfortable, beautiful aircraft. At the time DL was using an LHR-ATL-SLC routing and back. It seemed much more up to date and modern than the older 763's that DL was flying at the time.

I have also only flown on the 753 once from LAS-ATL. The plane seemed to take about 45 minutes to load. It took forever. Frankly, not very comfortable. Due to the very long narrow tube effect it felt cramped.

Anyway, how many of you have flown on both birds and what was your experience like?

Flew 753 on NW from SFO to HNL as well as sfo to msp and 764 on DL from ATL to FCO. 753 was good other deplaning in a single aisle with that many rows. 764 around 3, years ago the interior felt dated particularly by DL standards but I think they have been redone since then.

Flown on both twice, including a LHR-ATL 764 and ATL-TPA 753 connection. Prior was 764 MIA-LHR and MSP-ATL 753 which was subbed for a 763 that went tech over a holiday weekend.

UA 753 and 764 more times than I can count, and I've also flown on a DL 764 a couple of times. I'd say most UA / DL millon milers / 1Ks / DMs will have flown both.

As for the experience of flying on them, the UA 753 and 764 are probably my least favorite UA main line planes. Cramped is right, deplaning on the 753 seems to take forever, and the bathroom layout on the UA 764 is downright subpar. I'd take a 752 or a 763 over them any day, but sometimes the route and the schedule will force these.

I've been on both, and the 752 and 763 for comparison.

1x Delta 753 ATL to SLC
1x UA 753 DEN to EWR
2x Delta 764 round trip between ATL and MCO

I went out of my way to fly them. I was totally giddy for all four flights because I just don't have the opportunity to fly their frequented routes very often. The takeoffs on the 753s were both some of the best I've ever experienced. Loud and rumbling, smoky smell in the cabin. Seemed like the pilots pretty gingerly turned onto the runway due to the plane's length. Both had firm landings. Landing at EWR, I was in the back and saw our own tire smoke. I made sure I sat in one of the last rows on the 753s to get the true experience!

The 764 flights were too short to sink in but I still had a blast.

I don't care about load/unload speed, in most of these cases I was the last one off the plane. Trying to savor every moment.

753 on NW from SEA-OGG in 2007, and a DL 764 ATL-DKR-JNB in 2009.
In DKR we stayed on the aircraft during refueling but had to go through a security check while onboard, consisting of security personnel rooting through the overhead bins to match bags to passengers continuing on to JNB. After the check was complete, passengers from a DL flight from JFK boarded and we took back off.

This flight was memorable to me because we got yogurt for breakfast and the foil lids we very hard to remove, that combined with the pressure difference in the bottle caused yogurt to spray out everywhere. :)

I flew on Delta 764s when they were new and first took over domestic widebody services from the L-1011. Even ended up in first class once by volunteering to be bumped and taking the flight the next day. My one and only flight on Continental was on a 764 and ended up being the day they were combined into a single operating certificate after the merger with United, so I’m not really sure if it counts as United or Continental, but I like to say CO since it was my only CO flight and was booked with a CO flight number (the remaining segments of the trip were CO codeshare operated by United). I’ve also flown on United 764s.

For the 753, I’ve flown on them with Delta, United, and ATA.

I've flown on the 753 with Delta twice in the normal course of travel on PHX-DTW and LAX-HNL.

For the 764 I had to plan a trip just for the purpose of catching it with United on IAD-SJU.

Funny you mention that day as we were on COA1, B764 IAH-HNL that very day which if I recall was Nov. 30, 2011. The Flight Service Manager made the first PA and welcomed us on COA1, then said "whoops sorry, UAL1" and the entire plane booed loudly as most were COA lovers and did not like the merger at all. It was sad at the time for us who were COA faithful to see the UAL safety card in and Hemisphere magazine, though it has gotten much better since then for most.

Just missed you by a few hours then. It was indeed Nov 30. I was on COA72 HNL-SFO.

Looking again, all of my 764 flights were between HNL and SFO, save for the most recent which was AMS-IAD on United. And all of my 753 flights were between LAX and HNL except for the first, which was HNL to SFO on ATA.

Interesting... I find the 738/9 my least favorite at UA —have not and will not try the MAX out for at least a few more years— but I can see where you are coming from.

I have the 753 on UA & DL. Never on CO or NW though. The UA 753s seemed like they might still have been in a CO config though; this was during a period between 2013/14.

I have the 764 on both, but again, never on CO. I thought both UA & DL's were decent enough, but I also was not in Y/Y- on either so surely that effects my opinion here.

Yeah, 738/9 aren't high on my list either, especially if they have slim line bathrooms. Hopefully just an hour or two on those birds to the nearest hub before switching to a widebody or a 752 for a medium or long haul flight and not 5 hours to PTY :-) I don't get why UA can't do flat seats on their maxes when CM can, that would really move the needle.

The 764 layout is pretty much CO as well, same as the 753. As for 764 cabin experience, what kills it for me in business is that the bathrooms are behind you, at the border with economy. In spite of a curtain *and* a rope (don't recall a rope on any other type) the people in economy *regularly* get past the rope and then it's a traffic jam in business as well. Not bad plane types overall, just the operator choosing a particular configuration and layout that degrades customer experience.

The only times I flew on both I didnt even realise it till after.

767-400 -> Put on a Continental connecting flight out of Paris after yet another ding-dong at Air France. Cabin crew strike i think it was. I thought I was on a newer 767-300ER, found out after the flight it was the longer -400! Interiors are exactly the same just newer. Galley area I remember was distinctly different though I dont know the details. Different type of carts/ovens?

757-300 -> Denver to Chicago ORD. Again no idea till after the flight. I saw the aircraft parked at the gate and noticed the distinct 757 nose. Still in CO colors even though the merger was over. Assumed it was the -200. CO had 15-20 -200s? Only difference I remember was the lavatory in the middle of economy. Dont think -200s have those?

Raises hand. Both on UA/CO. I used to fly GUM-HNL-IAH when I was in the military which was operated with a 764 back in the PMCO days. I also flown on the 753 with UA/CO back when CO operated IAH-DEN when they were brand new and recently flew LAX-HNL on in first a few months ago.

Continental had 41 757-200’s

One was written off a few years ago after the merger in a hard landing

AFAIK all 40 of these RR powered aircraft are still in service

I've only had one flight on each. Continental MAN-EWR on a 767-400 in July 2003 and United IAD-LAX on a 757-300 in December 2014.

The lav configuration in business class used to have a lav next to the forward galley and for whatever silly reason (I'm sure someone can make sense of it) around 2016ish they changed it. We were flying home from MUC on a B764 and went to find the lav only to learn they were no longer up front......dumb though again don't know the reason.

Yes N26123 was the hard landing bird and the remaining 40 RR aircraft are still in service though some are still stored due to the pandemic.

That's pretty much my experience as well. The 753s are fine if you're up front (well, duh, most planes are). I'd say the proportion of 1Ks who would have both is maybe less than one would expect, as both the 753 and 764 have usually flown on pretty tight networks. It's not my own experience, but you could fairly easily have been an IAD-based 1K for a while and never fly either type given the 777-heavy fleet mix there. My spouse has been a 1K for about 5 years and has never flown either subtype, and I've only ever gotten one 764.

"Rare birds," yes, but if you live in the USA, both DL and UA's 753 are relatively easy to catch a ride on. The 764 is more challenging, given that it's now configured for long-haul, but DL's operating the type within the domestic system through at least Q1, mostly to sun destinations.

It's been a hot minute since I've flown on a 764, 2014 I believe FRA-EWR. I love flying it if only for the uniqueness of the frame.

When my ex gf lived in Houston, I would often fly DEN-IAH to visit for a weekend. Quite a few times I was on a 753.

Flew 764 many times on GRU and GIG to ATL on DL, both on Y and C. Comfortable rides.
On the other hand flew the 753 only once ,from MSP to ATL also on DL. Chose last row on purpose, long bird.

Both on DL and both between ATL and TPA.
In addition, also on DL, L-1011, 727, 732, 738, 752, 763 and 777. Miss the L-1011 and 722…the clam shell TR’s on the 732 were pretty cool too.

For Germans it is not very unusual to fly on a B757-300, even today. Condor still operates many of them to holiday destinations. So yes, I flew on B757-300 several times. B767-400 on the other hand are very rare in Europe, they only come/came in from the US occasionally. I had at least 1 flight on it somewhere within the US, probably on Delta, but I don't rememder where. ATL-PHX maybe?

Delta 764 JFK-HNL (specific trip for the type); UA 753 DEN-SFO (specific trip for the type); NW 753 MSP-PHX (specific trip for the type). Enjoyed them all.

753 Delta: somewhere to LAX, full cabin. Just another airplane, and as I was stuck in the back, getting off the blasted thing to make my connection took forever and a day.

764: Delta. Forgot to where, but found it to be like any other 767: a highly satisfactory experience from my standpoint. Sturdy, smooth, and it "felt right". I really like the 767 a lot and will gladly fly in it any time. The only WB I like better is the A330.
