What does the future hold for AA's "Wholly Owned" regional airlines?

Sun Nov 28, 2021 4:05 pm

1. Why does AA need three (wholly owned) regional airlines?

1A. Can the three be merged/consolidated?

1B. Is a merger impossible due to AA's regional scope clause?

What does the future hold for them? Do you think AA is inclined to keep them around? Or would it make more sense to completely outsource the flying (i.e. UA)
I've heard through the aviation rumor mill that ole' Dougie wants to completely eliminate 50 seater jets by 2025/2026 - What will Envoy and Piedmont do?

Lastly, I know a decent chunk of PSA's CR7s are nearly 20 years old (Yes, I know the CR9 fleet is very young) - What will PSA do now that the CRJ program has concluded? Could they supplement the younger CR9s with E175s?

Something would have to give on scope clauses as the newer Embraer E2 regional aircraft are heavier and non-compliant with scope. Another person posted a comment on another thread that said "Scope will be amended when in 5 years Southwest starts a regional carrier with Embraer E2 aircraft and forces the other majors and their pilot groups to renegotiate scope"

Those 50 seaters are getting long in the tooth and need to be gone. With Delta and United phasing them out I can see AA doing the same.
