Boeing 314 flying boat

Tue Nov 30, 2021 2:13 pm

These planes have always intrigued me. Has anyone here flown on one? I am curious if the pictures on the pictures do them justice on the interior. Thanks

The last PAA flight was 75 years ago and the last BOAC one 73 years ago, it might be hard to find a former passenger.

Well if you can get to Foynes in Ireland you probably will not find anyone now who remembers them there, but you will find a replica at the Aviation Museum that you can enter and see what the passenger cabin interior looked like.

See if you can find the book, “Night over Water” by Ken Follett.

It about a Boeing 314 flight across the Atlantic. True to Mr. Follett’s form, it is an incredibly accurate description of a passenger experience on Pan American. It reads like a 300 page trip report!

Thanks!
Amazon has it in stock and I just ordered it. I love reading about travel in the first half of the last century. Trains and ocean liners, too.

I agree. A great book about a trip on the flying boat, but the hot sex these two passengers enjoyed during the night put me in a cold shower
My purser days at Pan Am were after the Stratocruiser bunks so no play time on a 707 or DC8.....that we witnessed or were aware of!
I did work a couple corporate incentive charters where things got cozy with employees and spouses flirting and playing around after a few drinks.

The story of Captain Ford and crew delivering their 314 from Auckland to NYC westbound after Pearl Harbor attack is good reading. Basically, PAA HQ told him to deliver the plane to the MAT via a westbound route of his discretion. That’s being a pilot, got the library, look at a globe and an atlas and start flying.
