Question on Pro sports chartered flight logistics

Thu Dec 02, 2021 4:03 pm

Say a pro basketball team is based in Florida, but they have 2 straight road games: Monday they’re in Chicago & Tuesday they’re in Milwaukee. Would they fly from Chicago to Milwaukee or just bus it? I’ve driven that stretch of interstate 94 & it’s CERTAINLY quicker to drive to Milwaukee from the United Center than fly from O’Hare. Same question with having back-to-back games at Philadelphia & then in New York. Would the team take a bus & the empty plane be flown to the next city? The Atlanta Falcons always bus it to Charlotte when they play the Carolina Panthers, but the Panthers always fly to play the Falcons. Thanks guys!

Think your Falcons-Panthers comment is key.

It’ll always depend. There’s no hard and fast rule. Some teams will have a preference for flying. Others will take the bus.

Keep in mind that assymmetry/dead legs isn’t that uncommon. Most teams visiting the Packers, for instance, fly into ATW and out of GRB.

I believe visiting teams stay in Appleton which would be the reason for that.

IIRC, I read that depending on the agreement with the player’s unions of the different leagues stipulates when they will fly vs bus/train…something about mileage or travel times, etc.

I think the Rays used to take the train between Boston and NYC.
