Which route have you flown on the most diverse number of aircraft?

Wed Jan 26, 2022 2:41 pm

I feel like the title is quite self-explanatory; on which route between two airports have you flown on most different aircraft types? The list for me is as follows:

6
Baltimore/Washington - Tampa: 717-200, 737-200/Adv., 737-300, 737-500, 737-700, DC-9-30
Keflavik - Copenhagen: A320-200, A320-200neo, 737-8 MAX, 757-200, 757-300, 767-300ER
Reykjavik - Vestmannaeyjar: DHC-8 100, DHC-8 Q200, Do228, Do328-100, F50, BAe Jetstream 31

5
Atlanta - Sarasota/Bradenton: 717-200, 737-700, 757-200, MD88, MD90
Keflavik - Frankfurt am Main: A320-200, A320-200neo, 737-8 MAX, 757-200, 757-300
Keflavik - London (Heathrow): A320-200, 737-9 MAX, 757-200, 757-300, 767-300ER
New York (JFK) - Tampa: A320-200, 717-200, 757-200, ERJ190, MD88
Reykjavik - Akureyri: 737-8 MAX, DHC-8 Q200, DHC-8 Q400, F50, FH227 Metroliner III

Great question.

And a frustratingly low answer for me. On the vast majority of routes flown, I've only been on 1 or 2 aircraft types.

But there are a handful of routes with 3 types:

LHR-AMS: B737-8; A321-2; A330-2
DEN-LHR: B747-4; B777-2; B787-8
DEN-SLC: B717-2; B737-8; ERJ175
DEN-FLL: A319-1; B737-8; B737-9
DEN-DTW: A319-1; A320-2; B737-9

Interesting question. This was pretty fun to research. I have not been flying as long as some of you so my lists aren't quite as deep. To make them more diverse, I'll count out-and-back as one route:
5
BWI<->DEN: B733, B737, B738, B752, A320 (WN, UA, F9)
3
BWI<->ATL: MD88, B739, A320 (DL)
BWI<->TPA: B737, B738, B7M8 (WN)
BWI<->PHX: B737, A319, A320 (WN, US)
2
BWI<->LAX: B738, B739 (AS)
BWI<->BNA: B733, B737 (WN)
BWI<->MDW: B737, B738 (WN)
ATL<->TPA: B752, B753 (DL)
BWI<->CLT: A319, A321 (AA)
LHR<->CPH: A319, A20N (BA)
BWI<->AUS: B737, B738 (WN)
IAD<->CDG: A388, B77W (AF)
BWI<->SFO: A319, A320 (UA)
IAH<->SJD: B737, B738 (UA)

Early AirTran, if my dad is to be believed as a source. It was before I was old enough to log the types myself. :D

If we can count out and back as one route then I think I can get 5:

SMF<->DEN: 737-300, 737-500, 757-200, A319, A320 (All on UA, too)

And 4 on a couple of routes:

SMF<->MSP: A319, A320, 737-800, MD-90 (NW and DL)
SMF<->ORD: 757-200, 737-800, A319, A320 (UA and AA)
SMF<->LAX: CRJ-200, CRJ-700, ERJ-140, E175 (various regionals dba UA, AA, and DL)

Believe BUF-CLT holds the title for me. B733, B734, B752, A319, A320, A321, and E170. That's 7 different a/c off the top of my head, with maybe 1 or 2 more that I don't remember due to having flown them at a young age.

Lovely list! I'm intrigued which airlines flew a 747 and an A340 on this route?

Off the top of my head, probably Houston-Dallas. I'm gonna cheat and include IAH DFW DAL and HOU :)

733 735 73G Embraer 135/145/175 Q400 maybe an A319

So 7 maybe 8

Fun to research. Since 1983, the Denver-Phoenix city pair (both directions) I have 14 different combinations of airline/types.

American: A320, A321
Continental: 727-200, DC-9-82
Frontier: A319, A320, A321
Southwest: 737-200 (via ABQ), 737-300, 737-700, 737-800
Spirit: A320
United: 737-800, 737-900

By type (10):
A319: AA
A320: AA, F9, NK
A321: AA, F9
727-200: CO
737-200: WN
737-300: WN
737-700: WN
737-800: UA, WN
737-900: WN
DC-9-82: CO

CLT-BTR: CRJ-200 (once), CRJ-700 (twice), CRJ-900 (once)
BTR-CLT: CRJ-700 (twice), CRJ-900 (once)
BTR-IAH: ERJ-145, E175 (once each)
DFW-MSY: MD80, A319SL (once each)

Probably because I haven't flown any routes on a very regular basis my lists only get to five aircraft type on any one route. Working down from 5 to 3 types my list is:
LHR-EDI A319, A320, A321, 757, 737-400
LHR-GLA A319, A320, A 321, 757
LHR-FCO 737-400, 767-200, 767-300, A321
LON-AGP A300, A320,A321, E190
LON- NCE 737-400, 757-200, A320 E190.

The the rest are only three types - LHR-AMS; LHR-BCN, LHR-HKG; LHR-MAD; LHR-JFK; LHR-MAN.

I legit don't know. The only direct route I fly often enough to have data on is Brisbane to Rockhamtpton and vice versa.
I have done it on an Beechcraft King Air, Dash 8 200, 300 and 400, A320, A321, 737, 717, E170 and E190 at least. Plus ERJ 135 & 145 when flying to OOL and Cessna Mustang when flying to Brisbane Archerfield.

If you count flights with stops I suspect the answer would be Brisbane to Dubai which I've done with many airline/aircraft combinations over the years

Mine is likely BNA-ATL: 3M8, 712, 73G, 738, 752, D95, M88, and M90. These days it’s mostly 739 on DL so I’ll probably bag one of those shortly.
