Your 5th-freedom flights - Where did you go?

Thu Apr 21, 2022 10:47 am

Have we done this one yet? What fifth-freedom flights have you taken? Where to and with which airline? Looking forward to some very interesting results! Mine aren't very exciting but I'll start:

EK: BNE-AKL-BNE, MEL-AKL
LA: AKL-SYDx2
BI: BNE-AKL
QF: SIN-LHR-HKG
Booked for August on ET: NRT-ICN-NRT

Singapore Air: Manchester-Munich
Sichuan Airlines: Zurich-Prague
Garuda: London Gatwick-Amsterdam
Hainan Air: Prague-Belgrade
Korean: Vienna-Zurich
Etihad: Belgrade-London Heathrow
LATAM: Madrid-Frankfurt
Qantas: Bangkok-Hong Kong
Air China: Barcelona-Vienna
Scoot: Athens-Berlin

I am excluding all cases of EU/EEA carriers flying within the EU/EEA- otherwise I would have hundreds of routes from the likes of Easyjet, Norwegian, Ryanair and Wizzair

CP AKL-NAN-HNL / HNL-AKL
TG AKL-SYD return
MH AKL-BNE return
NZ LHR-HKG
CX MAN-FRA ( not sure whether this counts as I actually flew MAN-FRA-HKG so I don't know whether the MAN-FRA was available to purchase as a stand alone 5th freedom sector )
SQ DXB-IST return ( as above, not sure whether this one counts as I was flying SIN-DXB-IST return so again I don't know whether I could've purchased the DXB-IST sector as a stand alone sector)

This list is only 100% 5th freedom. I'm NOT including examples like NZ LAX-NAN from a LAX-NAN-AKL flight as I boarded in LAX and final destination was AKL.

Not too many, if I would like to fly a particular airline, I tend to try and visit the country of origin in the process

Cathay Pacific - SIN-CMB
Druk Air - DEL-KTM
Garuda Indonesia - AMS-LGW
Hainan Airlines - DUB-EDI
KLM - KUL-CGK
LAN Chile - MAD-FRA-MAD
LATAM - AKL-SYD
Varig - AMS-CDG-AMS

When I was a young lad in the 70s and 80s I used to search out and fly on unusual aircraft. Living in Toronto, they often included fifth freedom rights on carriers to/from Canada. For example:

BOAC VC-10, YUL-ORD
Sabena 737, YMX-DTW
CSA IL-62, YMX-JFK
LOT Polish IL-62, JFK-YMX
LOT Polish DC-8-62, YMX-JFK (one of the stranger safety cards in my collection)
Aeroflot IL-62, YMX-JFK
El El 767-200, YYZ-LAX
El Al 737-200, YMX-MIA
El Al 720, ZRH-ORY
Air Jamaica DC-8-61, YYZ-PHL
Qantas 747-200, YVR-SFO-HNL
Air New Zealand 747-200, HNL-YVR
CPAir 747-200, NRT-HKG
Air Canada L1011-500, SIN-BOM-LHR
Air Canada L1011-15, LHR-DUS

I wish I had done it more, AKL used to have a lot of fifth freedom carriers across the Tasman. Still a few remain.

YVR-JFK Cathay 77W
TPE-ICN Thai 333
JFK-LHR Kuwait 772
MAN-(IAD diversion)-JFK Pakistan 77L
MUC-MAN Singapore 77W
MAD-FRA LAN 789
YYZ-AMS Jet Airways 77W
DUB-LAX Ethiopian 788
AMS-LGW Garuda 77W

That's all I have excluding EU airlines within the EU. A little less than expected, I'll keep trying. A lot of 777 in my 5th freedoms and no narrowbodies. I also flew AMM-BKK-CAN on Royal Jordanian where BKK-CAN was available for sale, but I flew the full route.

KJ (BA6565/6566)
LHR-HBE-ADD in 2006
LHR-BEY-ADD in 2007
Both on an A321. I was wondering if I'd be able to see any damage from the 2006 war when flying into Beirut, but the stopover was at night, so it was too dark to see anything. When I get access to a computer I'll dig up the 2007 BA timetable and find the actual stopover times.

YVR-JFK & vv - CX
SIN-BKK - IC - Only experience connecting at international station on IC. MAA-BKK flight overbooked. Was put on MAA-SIN (A300) connecting to SIN-BKK(A320).
SIN-JKT - AI. I think that was my last flight on an A310!
FRA-JFK - SQ - Transferred over after overbooking fracas at FRA.
BKK-NRT - PIA. Only PIA flight ever.
BKK-SGN - AF
AMS-LHR - Garuda. Or was it to Stansted? Cheaper than EasyJet!
SIN-SYD and SYD-AKL - EK. Part of EK itinerary. Cheapest fare for BOM-AKL for 8 people was found by a clever Travel agent. Involved changing planes in DXB, SIN and SYD! Fun...NOT!

2 legitimate fifth freedom flights

AKL-SYD LA 343
BNE-AKL EK 388

Also done QF SIN-LHR, and while I did join that particular flight in Singapore I was connecting from another QF flight from Australia.

When I was a young lad in the 70s and 80s I used to search out and fly on unusual aircraft. Living in Toronto, they often included fifth freedom rights on carriers to/from Canada. For example:

BOAC VC-10, YUL-ORD
Sabena 737, YMX-DTW
CSA IL-62, YMX-JFK
LOT Polish IL-62, JFK-YMX
LOT Polish DC-8-62, YMX-JFK (one of the stranger safety cards in my collection)
Aeroflot IL-62, YMX-JFK
El El 767-200, YYZ-LAX
El Al 737-200, YMX-MIA
El Al 720, ZRH-ORY
Air Jamaica DC-8-61, YYZ-PHL
Qantas 747-200, YVR-SFO-HNL
Air New Zealand 747-200, HNL-YVR
CPAir 747-200, NRT-HKG
Air Canada L1011-500, SIN-BOM-LHR
Air Canada L1011-15, LHR-DUS

Whats the story with Sabena and El Al having 737s based in North America?

Makes me think of Aerolinas Argentina when they had MD-80s based in MAD to serve LHR, ORY, FCO, ZRH but had no idea the 2 carriers had short haul ops in place on the continent.

Both flights were operated by Montreal carrier Nordair, timed to connect with their inbound flights from BRU and TLV. The Sabena flight was in Sabena colours, the El El flight in Nordair colours. Flight and cabin crews were 100% Nordair, as were the safety cards, napkins, meals, etc.

I originated in YMX on both flights and was taken from the terminal in a small bus, to the remote parking area and boarded through the rear. At the same time, the “through” passengers boarded by a PTV through the front door. There were less than half a dozen passengers originating in YMX with the aircraft topped up to about 2/3 full with through passengers.

Not a lot of fifth freedom options for me, so I only managed one flight, KUL-CGK on KL.

In fact, it was a special Miffy themed flight in conjunction with the then new Economy cabin launch.

I've only flown one! KQ (Kenya Airways) from VFA to CPT on their 737-800. After takeoff, the captain gave three passes over the Victoria Falls to ensure both sides of the aircraft got an aerial view before rocketing off to cruise altitude to CPT. I have never before seen this on any commercial flight since... Amazing!
