Airports near homes

Fri Jun 10, 2022 10:53 am

I am trying to make a list of airports around 75-100 meters or closer to homes/buildings. Anywhere in the world. Do you take the challenge?

Reykjavik city airport is close. Are there any others that even come close? I am not thinking about big international airports, but airports with private airplanes or veteran airplanes. Minimum 500m airstrip.

(The only rule I'll stipulate is that it has to be a decent-sized town, 30k+ population; rural towns with 5 houses don't count.)

What defines "close" ?
Distance from an active runway ? Taxiway ? Terminal/ramp ? Airport perimeter fence ?
There's plenty of airports in lower income countries with slums immediately next door
What about heliports ? If a heliport is on top of a building, does that count ? Plenty of major hospitals have their own helicopter landing pad

Distance from an active runaway.
I prefer airports in normal or high-income countries.
Heliports doesn't count.
Thank you!

There is actually a house located at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, although about 750 meters from the runway. But it's fully within the airport perimeter. It's hidden somewhat behind P4 long term parking and can only be accessed through the parking lot.

An elderly couple is living there, the house has been in the family for generations. They simply don't want to move. From time to time airport staff pays them a visit, the airport feels responsible for it's citizens.

Vernon BC has homes within 100m of both ends of the runway thresholds.

Try looking at Myrtle Avenue, about 300m from the southern runway at London Heathrow (i.e. a really busy commercial airport)

SYD had three houses on airport property into this century. Once the tenants (who lived the security) passed they were demolished for remote gates and a roadway on the SW perimeter.

SYD had housing to the NW and east around 750m away.

Chicago Midway has houses essentially right up to the boundary fence on the landside, just separated by the roadway, with runways right up to boundary fence on the airside.

Wasn't there that farmer that had his house in the middle of Narita. He refused to sell his house, so they built the airport around it.

Don't know if anyone will count this, but I shall humbly mention N'Dolo Airport of Kinshasa, DRC. It's basically the secondary airport of Kinshasa, and most of the shady business involving GA aircraft occurs there instead of Ndjili which is the main international airport. I don't have many pictures, however, one look at the website airportdistancecalculator.com should show. The runway is mind numbingly close to densely populated areas in downtown Kinshasa, which itself is more populous than Paris! Worse is the fact that N'Dolo has no protection for overruning aircraft, and a large market actually lies right in front of the runway, meaning any plane could crash into that market (or any other densely populated area) if it fails to take off.

Unfortunately, that would be learned the hard way.

Indeed if I look at it at Google Earth there appears to be a house there entirely surrounded by taxiways. But there is a road tunnel which surfaces for a bit near that house, and a side road leading to that house. The only way to get to that house is through the tunnel. But there are no runways nearby, only taxiways. It's located opposite Terminal 1 Satellite 5 (Domestic flights). The Shibayama Railway tunnel passes just about underneath the house.

Most of the ones in the NY Metro area would qualify I would think (JFK, EWR, LGA, TEB, FRG, ISP, HPN)....

There are residences within 200 meters (North) of the runway at Dalian Zhoushuizi International Airport. 75-100 meters is super super close!

There are houses within 100 yards of the eastern end of London Southend’s runway.

Westchester County Airport (KHPN) in New York. There are townhouses right under short final for runway 34 and the locals are NOT happy about it (despite the airport having been there long before they were).

I wouldn't think this would be a short list. For example, there's a trailer park at CHA directly across the road from the 33 end of the crosswind runway. You could stand in the yard of one and pretty easily throw a baseball right onto the runway if you wanted. Same airport, the cargo ramp almost immediately abuts a car dealership and a bar. The active runway is probably right around 100 meters.

Not strictly a house, but I always think the golf course between the two runways at DMK airport is pretty neat. Always been intrigued how that works from an aircraft safety perspective if someone happened to shank the ball into the windscreen of an aircraft taking off or landing. Given the state of my game maybe I should just play there and see that for myself.

As for other airports, MEX is pretty penned in on all sides

YVR, albeit more than 100 meters has quite a few homes close to the threshold of 26L and there is also a single home right beside the runway about midfield just to the north of 26R/08L

I operated at KHPN a lot in the ‘80s, when I returned in the 2000s, I couldn’t believe they built that community on final.

Most 3rd world airports have vast slums near airports—Luanda comes to mind, like Kin, old Dakar.

This may not be what you have in mind, but it depends on your definition of airport! This is a small development of single family homes, all with hangars, which share a grassy strip. This way one can comfortably commute to the Washington, DC, area by plane.

majority of small GA airports in the states have houses very close. List would be stupid to try to come up with. local to me, KDUH Toledo suburban has peoples back yards about a 100 feet away from the runway.
