Best Avgeek Seat on ATR72

Mon Aug 01, 2022 12:45 pm

Hi guys, I'll be flying onboard MASwings ATR72 this coming week and since it's my first time flying with them and also on the ATR72, was wondering which seat would be best from an avgeek point of view?
Do help a fellow avgeek out here pls thanks!!

Back 2 rows with a window seat. You get off the aircraft first on arrival and have more time to ogle the aircraft from the exterior, particularly if a bus will take you to the terminal

I rode in the last row of an ATR once years ago and got airsick. The back end of an ATR, particularly the 72, wiggles and bounces around a lot, both on the ground and in the air. My recollection is that it wasn’t fun.

Personally I like to sit under the wing on any turboprop so I can watch the props, the wings, and in the case of the Q400, the landing gear :)

Had multiple flights on ATR72 and besides the plane being much more interesting by itself I don't think there is a particular good or bad seat. If you want to watch the engine running, go more to the front, if you want to see flaps and ailerons working, go to the back.

Anything from under the wing to the back for me. If the weather is clear, last couple of rows. If there will be weather and you have motion issues, under the wings. Old saying from back in the day "Front of the jet, back of the prop for the best ride"

I like sitting right next to the prop because you can see the pitch of the prop change.

This is a little bit off subject, but please allow.

On DHC8 I like to sit up front to observe passengers confusing the cockpit door with the lavatory door. I'm easily pleased.

Any row from trailing edge of wing to rear row. If you pick the last row, try to make sure it will have a window. I flew on an Aer Lingus (Stobart) ATR72 and the last row on that A/C just had a sidewall panel. Window was forward in the next to last row.

I always prefer the front rows on turboprops, it allows me to better see the prop in action and also to have good views of the scenary below.

This one was onboard a FireFly ATR-72-500 from SZB:

Being right next to the prop is not much fun to me, also kinda scary :D, and guaranteed to ruin any photo you'll try to take. UniAir ATR-72-600:

Haven't been on an ATR in quite some time, but for me, the same rule applies as any high wing aircraft - I always try to sit either before or aft of the engines since they obstruct the view.
