757-100 Re-engine

Wed Aug 03, 2022 2:45 pm

It’s been in my head for some time that while the 757-100 as planned probably wouldn’t have been good, but does anyone have hits on the implications of s 757 shrink re-engined to CFM56s? Particularly in terms of whether this would do anything worthwhile for financial performance, and how low the thrust rating could viably go…

The main problem with a 757 shrink is the ridiculously heavy and oversized wing it would have. Using CFM56’s instead of RB211s or PW2000s wouldn’t have changed that.

OEW versus the other aircraft in the segment would be the big issue

Congratulations, you designed an overweight A320.

Isnt the 757-100 essentially a 737-400 with a proper sized wing?

A shrunk 757 is a 737, but way heavier with zero advantage.

Folks really, really need to let the 757 go.

It would need to be re-winged with carbon fiber wings. Considering the market segment for which it would be used, some sort of a wide body fuselage would be optimal. The ability to accommodate twin aisles with better access for business class seats plus 7 or 8 abreast Y seating would make it a better MoM. Also it needs to be able to carry LD3-45 containers in the belly. Seriously it makes more sense to build a whole new optimized aircraft than do major revisions to a 40 year old aircraft based on an almost 60 year old cross section.

While the 757-100 would have been heavier, AFAIK it would have had greater range and probably even cooler takeoff performance than the 757-200.

And come on bro, this is A.net! The 757 won't ever be let go on here

No, not at all. The only thing the 757 and 737 have in common is the fuselage width.
