Can a B737-700, B737-800, E190LR reach JFK from LUX ? I don't think Luxair have any widebodies, or anything from Airbus

No, it had nothing to do with the apartheid in South Africa. It had to do with the convenient low taxes on aviation in Luxembourg back in the day, due to which they could offer lower fares than other European countries. I remember Icelandair using Luxembourg as a stepping stone further into Europe. However with the EU Luxembourg lost it's tax benefit, it's the same in the entire EU nowadays causing a level playing field. Nowadays Icelandair doesn't even fly to Luxembourg anymore, why would they? It's a small market and major airports like Brussels and Frankfurt are not too far away.
