Airport's that WN serves where they do not carry the most passengers

Thu Sep 22, 2022 4:34 am

There probably aren't a whole lot. I'm thinking of airports that are not major hubs for other airlines. It's obvious they are not the largest in ORD, IAH, LGA, ATL, CLT, MIA, etc. But are there any non-hub airports?

It will be interesting to see how airports like OGG and KOA shake out.

Bureau of Transportation Statistics has DL maintaining a thin lead over WN.

Of course the leader, SkyWest, operates under 3 brands there. So total for them needs to be spread out.

The BTS data are hard to use as they are domestic only and don't aggregate the regional carriers Mesa, Endeavor, etc. with their maketing carrier.

It does lead to some anonamlies. BTS data put WN as a clear number #1 at LAX. LAWA data which include the regional ops and international destinations put WN at a distant #4.

All of the non-American airports. At SJU, isn’t B6 #1?

SRQ must have Allegiant as #1.

A UA hub, but also worth mentioning WN is #2 at DEN, which is WN’s largest station.

I think the list of ones they are the biggest would be shorter.

PHX. I believe they may be the largest temporarily now but in general AA has been ever so slightly larger.

I think AA has edged out WN at Indy, too as DL cedes market-share.

For the period of July 2021-June 2022, WN is 3rd behind Delta and Allegiant at GRR.

The mistake in the first word of the thread title makes my head hurt. The plural of "airport" is not "airport's."

Aside from that, there will be a fair number. Sometimes it will be hard to tell from public data because regionals aren't consolidated with their respective majors for tracking purposes. For example, PIT lists WN as #1 and AA as #3, with a gap of approximately 1m passengers between them. But Republic, which operates regional flights for AA (but also others), more than covers that gap by itself, and that's without including AA's wholly-owned regionals like PSA and Envoy, each of which also have flights at PIT. So with one like that, who knows?

BHM would be an even clearer example of where the data messes with things: WN is #1 there in the DOT data, but DL is a fairly close #2 without its regionals, and AA's regionals combine to only 80k passengers/year less than WN without rolling in mainline, which offers more than enough seats to close the gap.

But for one really obvious one: FLL. It's a roughly 30 million passenger per year airport and WN is a fairly distant #3 to NK and B6. While it's a big station for those two carriers, neither designates it as a hub and it's really heavily O&D-focused.

Nice job, Jshank. Some of those will be easy to move from the maybe column. For example, DL is a clear #1 at SAV and AA plus its regionals is also half again as big as WN is there.

Southwest is definitely #1 at PVD. (Approx. 33% marketshare). Aggregating regional carriers into their mainline carrier, American is a close second. United and its express carriers along with Allegiant aren't even big enough to merit their own category.

There are months where WN carries the most passengers out of BHM and months where it is AA or DL.

At PNS, WN is #3 behind DL and AA.

At VPS, WN is #4 behind G4, AA and DL.

There can be variations at a monthly level, but these are the positions annualized.

For 2022, AA, DL, and B6 have all carried more passengers than WN. For 2021, AA and B6 both carried more passengers and WN was slightly ahead of DL.

Add the following stations where WN is #1 in addition to Jshank's list:

AMA, BUR, ELP, LBB, MAF, MHT, ONT, PVD, RNO, and SNA

Interesting numbers in the BTS, for June, G4 was #1 in DSM.

You are correct. JetBlue has them by beat by 200,000 pax at BDL. Interesting to see how many Avelo gets for this coming year just down the road in HVN. Will they win Connecticut?

CVG - I don't know where they rank these days, but I doubt that they're even #2.

GRR - Allegiant became #1 there pre-Covid & they still are.
