Piedmont Airlines to Portland, OR?

Fri Jan 13, 2023 3:05 pm

I was told that in or around 1988, I flew on Piedmont from CLT to PDX (probably on a 767-200). However I can't find any route maps or flight schedules that confirms they actually had this route. I think they flew to Seattle, but not sure about PDX. Just curious if anyone has that info. Thanks!

All of my 1988-89 PI timetables, through the last one, show them flying to SEA but not to PDX.,

Piedmont never flew to PDX, but PSA and USAir did. PSA flew MD-80s to SFO and RNO, while USAir flew 737-300s to SFO, RNO, and SEA until 1991, thencame back with 757s to PIT from 1994 to 1995.

You may have flown on a USAir 737 in Piedmont colors. There were lots of 737s at that time with blue stripes and a USAir sticker slapped on the fuselage.

Also, the 767s only flew to LAX and SFO domestically on Piedmont during that time period, as they were flown to LGW from BWI and CLT for their transatlantic service.

You can add TPA-CLT to that mix as well, flew that in June 1988 and I believe it continued on to LGW. IIRC it was a 762..

You are correct. The actual routing was TPA-CLT-LGW, and PI only flew the 762.

True, looks it was downgauged after the USAir/Piedmont merger. The original LGW route authority was TPA-CLT-LGW. I wonder if MCO saw them as well at that time. I'll check my Piedmont archive after work.

There was no CLT-PDX service until US launched the route after the HP merger.

A quick look at the January 4, 1989 Piedmont timetable shows Piedmont 767s operating from Charlotte to Baltimore, London Gatwick, Los Angeles, Orlando and Tampa. There was also 767 service from Baltimore to Los Angeles and Tampa.

The Tampa 767 service was downgraded to narrow-body equipment effective with Piedmont's May 2, 1989 timetable - so prior to the final merger.

Thanks....I think I got confused about the 767 services cause I had US on my brain from 2000. I think Piedmont inteded to fly to SFO from BWI with a widebody; they just never took delivery of enough until US owned them. BWISFO didn't start until 1992 with 757s.

I knew PDX was never served by PI, I just wondered why the poster said they took a 767-200. I knew SEA never had widebody service on either US or PI.
