Delta Dropping NGO, Will the Void Be Filled?

Wed Jan 25, 2023 6:17 am

Just saw a TPG article saying DL is dropping Nagoya service from DTW at the end of February. The route was pretty much there to support Toyota and link their ops in the US. In the 2010s Toyota moved their American HQ to the Dallas area and I'm surprised the route lasted this long even with COVID happening.

So that begs the question, will someone step in to fill the void? UA flies to NGO from GUM and JL flies NGO-HNL, but there is now a vacuum on NGO- mainland US.

In my eyes, these are the most likely options:

1. UA launches SFO-NGO
2. JL launches NGO-DFW
3. AA launches DFW-NGO

Nagoya is the 4th largest city in Japan (3rd if you're going off of air service markets and city population), and has had service to the US going back to the NW days. Would direct mainland US flights return to Nagoya?

Nope.

Japan / China premium traffic is far off from what it was pre-pandemic.
They are going to preserve HND / NRT routes before they consider trying to restore or start secondary Japan routes that were marginal pre-pandemic.

HSR / high speed rail from Tokyo is going to be the thing for the near-term.

Lufthansa also served NGO, but unlike at Osaka KIX has not indicated any return.

Nope. Toyota R&D is still in Ann Arbor. That is the clientele that takes the flight, not the folks in Plano, Texas.

Actually, all European airlines stopped serving Chubu, including Finnair. It's a shame, it is such a nice airport.

The HSR is actually so good, that the Delta staff up in HND would take that down to NGO on the operation days. No one was actually based down in NGO.

I doubt that until that premium traffic returns, NGO will return. The route is pretty unique to the DTW area.

It will probably end up in Hawaiians lap for obvious reasons, but not to the benefit of travelers on the US mainland. Fits the mold alongside HNL-FUK/CTS
