AY check-in at SIN

Mon Jan 30, 2023 4:33 am

Hi folks,

have been absent for a while but with the travel world slowly returning to normal it is time to travel again. With fares ex Oz still astronomical booked my first trip back to Europe as follows but think I may have made a mistake which will keep me from enjoying the lounges and pool in Singapore while in transit from Australia to Helsinki on April 6.

Arriving in to Singapore on Scoot from the Gold Coast one TR 7 at 14:45 hrs local time and connecting to Helsinki on AY 132 departing SIN at 21:50 hrs local time. Traveling ScootPlus and Finnair Business Class but on separate tickets. I thought I'd just enter Singspore, get my luggage and check-in for my Helsinki flight without thinking that the AY check-in may only open 3-4 hours before the flight which means I need to kill 3-4 hours land side.

Here are my questions:

-When does Finnair Check-in open at SIN ? Or do they have self checkin and bag drop at SIN so I can checkin again as soon as I make it through customs ?
-Does SIN have luggage storage facilities at Terminal 1 so we can take taxi in to the city and retrieve for checkin 3-4 hours once AY checkin opens

On the way back not an issue as we only have 4 hours transit between incoming AY flight and connecting to Scoot TR 6 back to the Gold Coast

Thank you in advance for your input/feedback

The best option would probably be online check-in. If you have a smartphone, download the airline app on it and use that to check-in. You can then also use your phone as a boarding pass. No need for any check-in desk or self-service check-in counter. As a matter of fact, you can check-in for your second flight before you even take your first flight.

That's what I did when I flew LAX-BCN-EIN. I was already checked in for BCN-EIN while still in LAX. The app can't see it. How far in advance you can check-in depends on the airline, with some airlines you can check-in online up to a week before departure.

I think he's mainly concerned with what to do with his bags.

Have dowloaded the AY App and we can indeed check-in 24 hours departure but as johns624 predicted, still unsure if there is a simple bag drop at SIN our will I actually need to check-in with an agent 2-3 hours before departure. AY website is very unclear and can't find an answer anywhere else. Who can answers my question.

At Changi, SQ allows check in and bag drop up to 48 hours before departure, and I have used this facility in the past. I know that doesn't help you if you are flying AY, but I think for that reason there are no left luggage facilities at SIN. Sorry that is probably only of marginal help.

Hi all, thank you for all the info. Problem is solved and we will just drop off our luggage for a couple of hours as we head in to Singapore before checking in our luggage 3 hours before our flight. Looking forward to my first trip back to Europe post Covid.

Actually Changing is one of the few airports that retags bags. Go to the transfer desk and they might be able to incept your bag and retag it and issue your AY boarding passes.

In 2018 my wife and I had a very bad experience with the baggage storage at SIN (forgot, which terminal). We flew DUS-SIN-SYD on SIA (In J :D ). We arrived around 6 a.m. local and departure to SYD was scheduled for 8 p.m. local. So time enough for a sightseeing tour in Singapore.

We didn't want to take our hand baggage with us during the sightseeing tour. So we went to the baggage storage. Here began the problem:

It was dead slow. There were just five passengers in front of us in the queue and it took more than a hour until our hand baggage was in storage.

The agent at the desk was dead slow. He made copies of our passports, printed several documents with two different computers and that for each piece of baggage.

So we arrived in town much later than planned. My wife wanted to go back to the airport soon, because we were not sure, if the reclaiming of our baggage would take another hour or more (What if ten other passengers would be in the queue in front of us?). My wife was in panic mode.

This was a bad experience in November 2018 (pre Corona). May be things have changed for the better today. Or not.

Little hint: To get from Changi airport to downtown Singapore, the MRT Mass Rapid Transit light train is a really nice experience. The line from the airport into the town rides elevated rough 6 m above the street level and you can see a lot.

Thanks Heinkel. Think my wife wants to have a look at "Gardens By The Bay" so we may just grab a taxi/Uber.

But arriving in to SIN with Scoot I thought we would need to clear immigration to collect our luggage and re-check with AY. I'm certain the transfer desks are only inside the secure transit area or am I making a mistake and there are transit desks in the public check-in areas ?

Changi does not segregate arriving and departing passengers so when you exit the aircraft you will be in the "transit" area. Security is done at each gate. You can choose to remain in the transit area and visit the transfer desks and then walk to immigration at any time.
