I want to fly on a 767-200

Mon Mar 20, 2023 11:52 pm

I got into the plane game kind of late and I've missed several opportunities to fly aircraft types that I would characterize as extinct or endangered (in passenger service). I'm trying to get on some of the unique types before they disappear for good.

Lately I have had an urge to fly the 767-200 in North America. Looks like my options are Omni and maybe Eastern (a big maybe!).

Given that Omni has filled in for commercial airlines every so often, that's probably my best bet. But how do I find out about these opportunities? Anyone want to pool some money for an A.net charter!?! (kidding). Any way to get on a freighter 762 as a non-airline employee? And I also don't see myself flying on a KC-46 anytime soon!

Other desires include:
A 727 (Zero G maybe)
A310
737-200 (Northern Canada)

Look up an airline on planespotters.net... get the list of aircraft registrations that interest you... and then track them regularly on FR24. Look for patterns... and you will often find something which allows you to book a flight at modest risk and price

Orni is unpredictable as they're a charter airline, you never know where they're going to be.

Eastern is down to one route, MIA-SDQ but they fly charters as well. I guess which aircraft they put on their one route depends on how much demand there is.

I hate to say it, but you might have missed the boat on this one.

OAI and Eastern are about the last 6 operating frames in the world, and I don't think Eastern is flying very much these days. Airfleets is only showing one of the Eastern 762s not stored.

It's sort of remarkable that any of them are still operating. Most of the Eastern frames are almost 40 years old, cobbled together years ago by Dynamic Air, and according to a buddy who used to work there years ago, were somewhat mistreated.

Don't forget Air Zimbabwe, they also got 2 767-200s in their fleet of which one is stored but the other one is active. I didn't mention it before because you were looking at the US but it might be worth looking into.

There was a VIP 767-200 in Royal Brunei Airlines colors parked at Atlantic Aviation at LAX on Sunday. So you could try and become friends with higher-ups in Brunei?

Eastern operated a couple of monthly MIA-SDQ flights with the 762 - keep an eye on their website. The last one was about a week ago IIRC (17th Feb and Mar), they may run them again one day.

A little abrasive - I did say to check the site, as they may run them again. When I last looked (I was strongly considering booking the March rotation) it was showing as the last scheduled service.

Great idea.

I see their April 7, MIA-SDQ-MIA is quite workable with good timing. Enough time to have a beer in the SDQ lounge bar looking at the local traffic for a couple hours.

I have long learned that when you are searching out for a particular type, it’s best to jump when you see it. Often the opportunity doesn’t arise again.

I completely agree - there are too many times I've second guessed myself and missed the last chance at a type or airline. Go get it whilst you can!

Transit mat be an option. I flew Utair Dushanbe-Vnukovo-Yerevan on the 762 and 738 a few years ago

Right!

UTair I think have a few knocking about the former Soviet routes. With the recent Russian shenanigans people like UTair may end up looking to prolong the life of these birds

Haha no thanks regarding the Russia suggestions.

Regarding Eastern, I can see that they have a 767 scheduled for it, but I cannot tell if it is a 762 or a 763 (and I'm sure it could change anyway). Can anyone see what variety they plan to use?

Expedia specifically notes a 767-200 over a -300. But, realistically, as you say, that can change.

Join the USAF, become a boom operator and you may get the KC-46A...technically a 767-200. :duck:
