Largest and Smallest Aircraft You've Flown On

Thu Apr 06, 2023 12:38 am

Says it all in the title. Also any plans/hopes to fly on a bigger or smaller aircraft than your current biggest/smallest?

For me the biggest is the A380. Flew roundtrip on EK AMS-DXB-AMS in a single day just to fly on one. It would be pretty difficult for me to fly on something bigger than that unless the economics of the aviation industry eventually favors VLAs for long-haul flying.

Smallest was this past February on the C208B Grand Caravan operated by St. Barth Commuter from SBH to SXM. For such a small plane it was actually pretty nice and almost felt like being on a private plane. I could definitely fly on something smaller, but that's not a high priority for me.

Largest would be the Boeing 747-400. Smallest would be the Cessna 172.

Smallest: Hawk ultralight. Horrible contraption, flies even worse than it looks. Have no intention of trying anything smaller.
Largest: Not to brag, but, it’s the An-225 BAH-BGW-BAH. Unlikely to ever have an opportunity to fly something larger.

A380 and some sort of small aircraft that landed on grass landing strips in Botswana where I sat next to the pilot. I wish I had been better about what aircraft, but to have to buzz an elephant to get it to move off the grass landing strip was memorable.

The biggest for me is the A380, with CZ, QF, and EK.

The smallest I suppose is the Powrachute Pegasus which looks like this:
Image
Source: Operator's website

But I have also flown on a AirBorne Edge weight-shift control trike and a Quicksilver Sport ultralight, so I am not sure how to define which is smallest. I've never flown any single seat aircraft.

Largest - Airbus A380
Smallest - it was a float plane out of Vancouver Harbour with only 5 seats including the pilot, but stupidly i never made a note of what the plane was. The smallest I have a record of is a Beachcraft King Air.

My largest was A380 (AF) and smallest was Embraer 110 (ASA). I remember flying even smaller aircraft DFW - LAW. They were marketed by ASA as a DL commuter, but some of the aircraft were 10 seats or fewer. I remember one that was 7 seats.

Biggest: BA B744s. LHR - HKG - LHR on G-BYGD & G-BNLP in 2011. They were not very comfortable but I was happy to be down the back of such a great aircraft anyway. I remember shaking from side to side on take off, and hearing the wind rushing over the fuselage as we flew through turbulence over Russia.
Smallest commercial: BE S340. Back when Flybe had the contract for the PSO route between DUB & CFN, operated by Loganair of course. A great day trip in January 2015. I remember getting a teacake and a cup of tea, admiring the views of the Irish midlands. Then seeing Mt Errigal, on approach, and the stormy Atlantic right below, before landing beside the beach. I wandered the empty beach and rambled around a few roads before having hot chocolate in the adorable little termianl before the flight back. The only downside was that I didn't get my window seat on the way back because the cabin crew thought I wouldn't enjoy sitting backwards :(
And I have flown a C152, departing and arriving Newcastle Aerodrome, in Wicklow . I thought it was only going to be a sightseeing flight but I was briefed otherwise...

RPT - Largest is 744, smallest is Jetstream 31

Smallest overall is probably the Auster of some description that flew me from a remote farm to hospital after I accidenatlly drank kerosene as a toddler. But plenty of Cessna and Piper flights growing up too.
