How Do You Pronounce Airlines And Aircraft?

Hi there?

My questions are:

How do you pronounce JAL? I say J. A. L. Each letter separately, however some people say Jal, all one word. How do you say it?

How do you say 737? I say seven, three, seven, however lots of people say: seven, thirty seven. How do you say it?

The above question goes for boeings whole range, except 777, where I say triple seven.

However with Airbus aircraft, I say A three thirty, not A three, three zero. What do you say?

I've always wondered what the 'proper' way of saying these titles is.

there isn't a proper way of saying these titles. I however say J.A.L, seven three seven, seven seven seven and a three twenty.

I call it J.A.L but my japanese friend told me that they pronounce it as JAL, or more "accurately" : "Ja-Ru" (since japanese language has no "L"). However, JAL is more popularly known by the japanese as "Nikko" which is short for "Nihon Koku" or "Japan Airlines".

Hehe, Interesting topic.

I pronouce each letter of JAL.

For most Boeings I pronounce it either way:
"Seven-Three-Seven" or "Seven-Thirty-Seven".
However for the 777 I say "Triple-Seven".

For Airbus, I say "A-Three-Thirty", "A-Three-Eighty" etc. But sometimes I just say "Three-Thirty"

I pronounce JAL as one word, ie Jal. Common name for a 737 is "Pig", although I'll often just say, "Seven three (eight hundred)". And a 777 is, and should always be known as, a Triple.

I say 'jal'. as well as 'seven fourty four' for a 744 and 'triple 7' for a 777. I also say things like 'A K L' for Auckland, 'CRJ' and 'BAE' instead of their long proper names.

What about airports? I know that at LAX, everyone who works where I do (and this may be true for other airline employees at other airlines) pronounces LAX "lax," as in 'relax.' I guess it's a more natural way of saying it than by saying each letter separately.

Anyone else encounter this either at LAX or at any other airport? I would be curious to know.

What my dad & I have done (which we learned from a pilot friend) is just to shave it down to the middle number with Boeings & take the number out of Douglas jets, etc.

For example:
717- "1"
727- "2"
737- "3"
747- "4"
DC-9- "9"
DC-10- "10"
...and so on. Comes out like "Is that a 3?" Does anybody else do this?

As for airprot codes, I say each letter...

LAX.... L. A. X
LHR.... L. H. R

My mum says Lax as in relax, but she thinks Lax is the name of Los Angeles airport, just like Heathrow is the name of London's main airport etc. etc.

In my experience, Americans say "triple seven" or "seven thirty seven", whereas the rest of the world tends to lean towards single numbers, including non-English speaking airlines:

Japan Air Lines: JAL

Boeing: both ways, depends on the airplane type actually:
717: Boeing seven seventeen
727: Boeing seven twenty seven
737: Boeing seven three seven
747: Boeing seven four seven
757: Boeing seven fifty seven
767: Boeing seven six seven
777: Triple seven

so it varies for Boeing planes. for Airbus planes, I usually say, e.g., for A320, A three twenty...so on for all other airbus planes (three ten, three thirty, three nineteen, three forty etc etc).

no real proper way to say aircraft types, whatever floats your boat.

I guess I'm one of the few who calls Boeings this way:

717.. Seven one (or Seven-one-two for a 717-200)
727.. Seven two (or Seven-two-one; Seven-two-two..)
737.. Seven three ( Seven-three-three; three-four, three-five, etc.)
and so on

Airbuses are just like everyone else's.. A330.. A Three Thirty..
