Fastest US Airport For Immigration

Wed Jul 21, 2004 7:01 pm

With all the new security measures now established, and delays now expected. Which is the most efficient US airport for immigration?

Miami's fairly quick. Off peak hours are the best, obviously. During the rush hour, I have still found it swift, compared to other airports.

many factors - peak times, number of avail Customs/Imm agents etc etc.

The one I have seen that is most efficient and consistent is ORD. MIA, SFO, LAX, JFK can all get pretty bad depending on arrival times.

I have to disagree - I've had nightmares at ORD and sailed through LAX every time!!

Even before 911, Miami was, in my view, one of the worst, not only in the US, but also worldwide. A most unwelcome and miserable experience, especially after a long flight!

One of the best was SFO, although they do it rather strangely there with Immigration after baggage hall, but maybe could have changed!

BOS can be a hideous nightmare, if you arrive during the European rush (1200-1500). On the other hand, I've had my fastest pass through US INS/Customs at BOS, so I guess you have to time it right. The BA terminal at JFK is usually not too bad, at least it didn't used to be.

As Rmenon says, it depends on a lot of factors. Airports that use one small terminal per airline are less efficient at handling several large plane arrivals - but can also be quick if your small plane is the only plane to arrive since they're only dealing with your plane and not a load of others.

CO was good arriving into IAH several times. Mostly US passengers on board so the foreigner line is smaller!

Out of interest, what do US citizens need to do to enter the country - just wave their passports, like we do in the UK, or do you actually have to stop and answer questions, fill in forms, etc?

I've experienced JFK, EWR, MIA, ORD, SFO, PHL, DEN and BOS. I have to say ORD is the best of the lot.

DTW has the potential to be the fastest once they staff all of the booths. When I was working at DTW, only 1/4-1/2 of the booths were being used and that was as about 4-5 flights would arrive at one time and they seemed to move through pretty decently

I can compare NWA hubs only, MEM is definitely the fastest. As stated in the post above, DTW could be the fastest. But then, the thought of more wide bodies arriving at the same time is scary. That's why MEM with its lonely AMS-MEM is so great.

Tought biased, I find San Francisco as the best. It was built to process 3,500 people per hour. With the terminal set up of 2 seperate concourses, it always seems swift.

Los Angeles, Nightmare!!!! Came in on a 10 1/2 hour flight from Nadi, Fiji, then spent 1 3/4 hours in processing. I also came in from Cabo San Lucas and spent almost as much time in customs as the flight was long. Not again!!!

When I went to SFO in April it was very fast! We were queuing in the international bit (or something like that) and this guy said we could use any desk, and there were loads of empty desks further along. I was stood at the desk for literally seconds as he did his thing, stamping the passport etc.

Then got the bags and a guy with a green pen came around asking if we've brought any fruit/veg etc into the country, we said no, he put a mark on the sheet which let us get out of the place  Smile All very fast  Big thumbs up

MIA was fairly quick when I came in from AB) (FRA / FRF / EDDF), Germany">FRA on LH. I especially enjoyed that customs/ immigration was upstairs as opposed to downstairs at most airports.

I also went through the old T4 at JFK and the new T4. Both were quick. Old T4 was awful.
New T4 is one of the best I have seen anywhere. Certainly put LHR to shame!  Smile

Geoff, we US citizens also have to answer questions, like how long were we in whatever country we visited, and why were we there.

As to the question of what US airports are good airports to arrive in from international cities. I would think it would depend mainly on what time you arrive at the airport, and what agents you are dealing with more then anything else.

I had different experiences in same and different airports at different times.

Overall I would say IAD is the easiest and friendliest I have experienced, average took me 5-10 minutes (that's where I mostly go though)
PIT was the quickest by going through the line took me 5minutes but I got stopped and taken into "special" room, so it took me 30min.
Boston was nightmare, had to wait 45min in line and then I guess the officer had a bad day and spent 20 minutes with the officer, while the officer checked every single page in my passport and asked the same questions over and over. (You would think, asking the same question once is enough)
ORD was a nightmare 45min in line and missed my connecting flight, had to spend 5 hours in the airport ....
JFK to my surprise was the quickest I have ever experienced - one minute.
SFO had to wait about 5 min. and the officer was very funny and friendly.

For me LAX is the worst hands down. I have passed through at least 10 times and have never been through in under an hour.
The longest I had to wait was 3 hours. This was mostly because we had 1 airline arrive from Mexico and another 747 from China. Can I say that?
I'm not racist, but I imagine these citizens would be 'high risk'.

Best airport would be DFW for clearing immigration. Shame the baggage takes so damn long.

Jeff - thanks. Waving our passports is literally all we do.

Although JFK is normally bad, we did manage to get from plane to street in 11 minutes once. We got upgraded from economy straight into Upper Class (friends in the business...). This was during foot'n'mouth in the UK and we were first off the plane, gate was close to the immigration hall, we were first through immigration, had the first few bags off the plane, went straight through customs, and were by the taxi rank in just eleven minutes from the plane door! Phenominal. Never had it since, of couse, not even (or especially so when it comes to baggage reclaim) in the UK.

DUB! Yes, that is right, Dublin. (I hope it "counts" since there is US imigration there.) For the US flights, you clear immigration at DUB prior to boarding. When I flew DUB-JFK, when I arrived at JFK T4, they escorted all of the EI passengers to the side and we went straight to get our luggage. Sadly, there were not that many people there to make a huge difference, but it was nice.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Like any airport (to an extent) it probably depends on how lucky/unlucky you are with your arrival time, but I have never waited more than five minutes coming back into the country at JFK. My wife, who is not a US citizen, has never waited more than about 10 minutes (she now goes through with me, but she didn't always).

I don't have much experience at other airports (EWR, but it's been a while).

Philadelphia is brilliant for clearing immigrations.

Since they opened Terminal A last summer you get through immigrations within five mins and that is taking into consideration up to 10 US Airways flights arriving from Europe within a short period of time.

They have over 25 checkpoints for foreign nationals and this compared to only 6 before the terminal extension took place.

I never had any problem in ATL! I arrived from AB) (FRA / FRF / EDDF), Germany">FRA, BRU, ZRH and CDG and never had any problems to catch my connecting flights! I have made my worst experiences in CVG because I never! made it to a connecting flight - even with more than 2 hours transfer time. JFK and EWR depend very much on the arriving time. Never had a major problem in ORD, SFO, LAX and PHX.

Soups,

What happended you miss with your flight to LAX and it was very slow in IAD for immigration & customs more than 2 hours and why? They should need to make beefing up and make reduce saving time to get there with their flight.

AUA Aruba is the best you and only your flight clears US Immigration and Customs most of the time. You get this hassel out of hte way before you board so the flight is considered a domestic flight and you are off to any airport as domestic now this is convient. And the flight won't leave with out you and you check in the requried 2hours ahead so this is the best

I've got a friend passing through EWR customs entering from Sweden. He's visa-wavier. How difficult will it be for him?

Nice to read that DTW is pretty fast. I assumed it would be...I'll be going through there in about five weeks on NW 72 from Manila. With a connection time of 1 1/2 hours, I'm not worried at all, especially since NW 72 seems to be either on time or early virtually every day.

It obviously depends on the number of planes arriving at the same time, but I've been lucky generally. In BOS, JFK, ORD, and SFO I've never had a long wait. But I'm sure it can be packed at the "right" times.

IAD has always been great when I've gone through there- they especially have a very efficient system to get your bags after clearance back to your domestic flight - never spent more then 5-10 minutes.

DUB is the smart choice when flying from Europe! I also sailed through SFO just 2 weeks after 9/11, not what I was prepared for. I even got a 'have a nice day' from the immigration lady, does this show the laid back attitude in CA?

EWR is pretty good, at least for US citizens. I routed my mother through EWR from FCO, and she's an old Asian lady who's english isn't too good, but she made it through and to her connecting flight back to IAH no problem, and usually when she travels, I have to babysit her through the process.

What airport is best to go through immigration? It depends on too many factors.

1. Terminal. Most arrival airports have immigration/customs at various terminals. Some are better than others.

2. Time of arrival. Not so much the time of arrival, but how many flights are arriving at the same time at the immigration facility. You might be going through an airport on the first flight of a bunch, and you might be the second or third passenger on your flight, so you go through in two minutes.

3. Status. The lines for US citizens and residents are separate than for foreigners. Generally speaking, citizens and residents go through a lot quicker than foreigners. That also means that sometimes it might be good for a tourist to come through an airport that handles more citizens than tourists, like ATL, because the lines will be quicker for tourists. MIA and MCO handle a lot of foreigners, so they are worse for foreigners than for citizens.

About a year ago I spent more than three hours in IAH line for customs. The line to get to the immigration room reached the arrival gates. I lost my connecting flight and almost lost my newly scheduled connecting flight. The place was just flooded with people. Everybody was hungry and bitter (airlines don't feed you, and immigration certainly doesn't either).
I have been through MIA several times and waited an hour and 45 minutes tops, but never like IAH was last August...
I honestly try to avoid IAH at all costs since then...

Aloha - EWR is *okay* for foreigners. It does handle a whole terminal of airlines, but on the other hand there are a lot of international arrivals, especially early afternoon. Expect 10 mins queueing (excellent) minimum, more like 20-45 mins (average). Allow plenty more time if connecting to another flight.

Sorry for you New York area guys, but immigration at both EWR and JFK are by far the nastiest in the country. Brusque, rude, and the slightest mistake on your form and they'll send you back to the end of the queue to fill a new one in. IAH on the other hand on all occasions have been quite pleasant.

I have also been through DUB and it was very easy and quick. BWI was by far the worst I have experienced. They have a ton of customs agents and only a few international flights. They search just about everyone's bags and ask for your life story. Philadelphia has the worst customs agents I have ever seen. I guess they're great if you like to get screamed at after getting off an 8 hour flight!

Completely, completely untrue. Let me relay the story of the last time I came into the country, which was about 3 weeks ago.

We arrived on ANA flight 10 from Narita. I believe we came into terminal 2. The customs area is old and ugly, yes, but it also doesn't seem to get many flights so every time I've come in there we've been the only flight needing to clear. Anyway, this was my first time traveling together with my wife as husband/wife and we didn't really know how it was supposed to work - she went to the alien line, I went to the citizen line, but we'd only filled out one customs declaration form (as it says to do on the form).

I sailed right on through, she got hung up because of her lack of a declaration form. She explained that I was with her, the customs guy called me over and explained that we should go through together from then on, on the US citizen line. He was very nice, he even stammered a bit when he said I would still need to go through the "foreigner" line in Japan because he did not want to use the word "foreigner" (I actually said it for him, he said "I didn't want to say that, I was going to say 'alien' but even that's kind of bad").

Because of the type of visa my wife is on, we had to go to another room for clearance. There was nobody else in there, and we sailed on through again. The customs agents again were very nice - maybe a little too jovial with each other (bit of a different experience after coming back from Japan, where nobody ever talks to each other socially while on the job), but nice, and they got us out of there in around 2 minutes.

Got hung up again trying to leave baggage claim because we had declared that we were carrying food. Agent just asked us what we had, we told her some pickles, some cake, nothing fresh, she said "ok, you're free to go" and that was it.

I have never experienced any rudeness at JFK, from anyone, customs agent or otherwise. This time, we got hung up several times in the process and it still only took us maybe a total of 20 minutes from the time of departing the plane to being out the door (including getting our bag, as baggage claim is directly adjacent to customs at this terminal). We did not have to refill out any forms even though we made an obvious mistake in the process.

There may be individual employees who are rude, or who may be having a bad day or whatever, but these are federal employees under the Office of Homeland Security and I know they will not tolerate that sort of thing if they see it. So I don't think JFK or EWR or anywhere else is really any worse than any other airport in terms of the customs employees.
I'm tired of being a wanna-be league bowler. I wanna be a league bowler!

Out of the airports that I have gone through customs more than twice (EWR, JFK, IAH, SFO, HNL, LAX) I would have to say that IAH was the best and HNL was the worst. Of course there is the odd occasion at any airport that you might have a bad experiece, so that is why I only reference the ones that I have been to many times.

IAH - just never really had a problem. Usually 15-20 minutes in immigration and 5 max through customs.

HNL - lots of walking and looking for illegal plants and vegtables. I was patted down at least 3 times and they went through my luggate every single time. And this was before 9/11.

In my experiances ONLY  Smile as a US Citizen -and often travelling on a Gov't Passport or on Orders and an ID, though much personal travel as well.

Chicago-ORD has been good to me, fast, and no hassles
Houston-IAH has been good to me, fast and no hassles
Newark-EWR- was mediocre, slow but pleasant (will go through again next month and will see)
Dallas-Ft Worth-DFW has been mediocre, not bad, not superfast either, it seems if they fully staffed it, things would go faster
Baltimore-BWI was not ready for our gov't charter flights don't know about a civil flight
Miami-MIA has been the worst ever, slow, with variuous levels of idiocy

Let me say that EWR is not bad at all in terms of Customs. It is a huge hall and they process fast, and contrary to an above comment, the guy was really super friendly to out family of 5.

Boston, my beloved home town airport, is not bad either. The rush though as somebody mentioned probably will take its toll though

MIA and MCO handle a lot of foreigners, so they are worse for foreigners than for citizens.
I sailed right through MCO. As a matter of fact, I do not think that I ever stopped moving! The one bad thing is that you have to go through security after customs.

I have had no problems at JFK T1, T4, and T7.

We arrived on ANA flight 10 from Narita. I believe we came into terminal 2.
I am pretty sure that T2 does not have immigration facilities, but rather T3 does. Also, ANA uses T7. You may have gotten caught in a rush with BA, UA, and others.

On a side note, did T5 (TWA) have customs, or did the planes first go to the old IAB?

RE: Fastest US Airport For Immigration

"Completely, completely untrue."

I'm speaking from experience, not opinion. I've been through those two airports something like a dozen times in the last 8 years. Only *once* have I ever had anything approximating "reasonable". I'm not expecting red carpets and flowers, just to be treated like a human being, which is exactly what every other airport in the US which I have been to has done to me (approx 7 other airports, most more than once).

True, agents have bad days, but to have something like 92% of agents being less than polite is saying something.

Bear in mind US citizens (which I assume you are) may well be treated differently from non-US citizens. That's not US specific, that's a fact all round the world - local citizens tend to get better treatment than non-locals. I have nothing against that, but it does soften your arguement somewhat.

I haven't gone through US Customs/Immigration at a US airport in years. As I usually have to change planes somewhere, I try for transfers in Canada. It has always been efficient, consistent, and courteous. The same for Dublin.

Does anyone know, or have a website, a list of international airports where you can pre-clear US customs?

Regards,
Jack

What about SJU. Since thw question states Inmigration, I understand it means for non US Citizens. SJU handles non US flights just about the same as always, since we had always had hight security procedures even before 9-11. And since we are US property, it can be used as a gateway to the US. We only need to show a driver's license or any goverment picture ID to fly to the USA... just like intra-state flights. And going through Customs is fairly quick. And the threatment, awesome! Anyone has tried SJU?
