Unpopular Destinations With Crewmembers

Tue Aug 10, 2004 5:56 am

Part of the fascination associated with working as a pilot or FA is the possibility to travel around the world and be a "citizen" of world class cities such as New York, or enjoy the wonders of an exotic tropical destination such as Tahiti.

More often then not crews end up being assigned to places such as violent Lagos or booze free Teheran (nothing against these places, these are just examples).

With that in mind, what overnight stops are least likely to be popular with crews?

Having dated a CO FA, the least popular overnight that she and her friends talked about was TLV.

I think that depends absolutely on personal interests. I might like destinations others don't like and the other way around.

Why MCO? You'd think everyone would jump at the chance for a little R&R at Disney World!!! (Coming from a former WDW employee...)  Big thumbs up

As far as the U.S.I would think all of the farmville's in the country would be least popular such as places like Brainerd Minn., Mason City IA, etc. with the most popular being FLL, MCO,TPA, LAS, etc.

I'd imagine that the unpopularity with Florida, or at least Orlando is from the bratty kids and tourists who tend to be on the flights going there for vacation.

JNB is a bit of a bore. When we get to the crew hotel, they tell us not to go walking down the streets alone during the daytime. So we get shuttlebussed to the grand choices of two strip malls and a casino.

Oh well, at least I won a few quid the last time I was there...

Maybe, but dealing with a planeload of screaming kids on the trip there & back more than negates any benefit.

one of my least favorite flts to work is New York - FLL. either to or from. the attitudes are just way different than those elsewhere (especially since i'm from southern CA). working flights TO MCO is cool...feeling everyones excitment of going on vacation...especially the little kids. all excited to go see mickey and friends. but the return can be a different story!

SQ FA's hate CPH, because on the eastbound trip most of the pax in eco gets pretty drunk, and a normal beveragestorage only last half the flight.

Thanks for the replies but I see some answers relating flights crews do not enjoy, I am really more interested in knowing which places the crews don't like to spend the night or a few days.

As a CO crew member I know that MCO is hated because of all the screaming kids and stuff like that. NYC-PBI is always a dread because of the attitude. MEX, and MTY just not real great or fun places to lay over. But like others said everyone has their particular likes and dislikes. Take care

I have a very good friend of mine who works as a FA for MX... she told me (in a very polite way because I was born there) that the worst route for her are the flights to CCS just because of the bad attitude of the people travelling there.

I felt so ashamed... & flying MEx - CCS a lot of times wit MX I can understand her so much!!!!!!.

My worst layovers are Jamaica (high crime rate), the Dominican Republic (got my first parasite there), Caracas (high crime rate and polluted), and Brussels, Belgium, just because I get bored there. I prefer destinations with a cooler climate- our polyester AA uniform is unbearable in heat and humidity! It goes without saying I fly a lot of LHR for that reason!

Iowaman:

BRD area is God's Country. The Great Northwoods not Farmville. Some of the highest land values in the Midwest. Fastest growing part of Minnesota. Hundreds of pilots and FAs from every US carrier LIVE in the area and commute hundreds if not thousands of miles to their bases. Why? Because they can. Its thier favorite destination.

That's true, anything north of MSP isn't really farmland.....just trees. Surprises me it is growing very fast, it gets very cold up there.

Many times the layover hotel makes or break the "popularity" of a destination, not necessarily the city itself.

For example, years ago crews would sometimes stay at the Milford Plaza Hotel in New York. It apparently was such a dump the crews would call it the "Mildew Plaza" and would not like their layovers there, despite it being NYC.

MEX often gets a thumbs-down as well for the poverty and pollution.

My least favorite is GSO... boooorrrrrring layover! Decent hotel but dullsville.

It really is up to the individual. Some would say DSM would be lame, but since I have friends there it's cool by me. One's man trash is another man's treasure as they say!

PS: off to a 30 hr layover in Maui tomorrow... definately NOT on the "most hated list"!  Big grin

All the DL crews I know love coming into MCI because they stay down on the country club plaza, which is world reknown for the shopping and of course the enourmous amounts of fountains...(2nd highest number in the world..behind Rome...or so they say)

I heard once from LH FAs that their worse flights are to Russia. The main thing is the language difference and misunderstanding and because they have to deal with a lot of drunk passengers especially when they refuse to put their seat belts on, get up during take off and landing and etc.

You must make a difference between "unpopular destination" because of the city itself, and "unpopular destination" because THE FLIGHT to get there is often difficult (length of the flight, PAX type, etc...)

Among Air France Crews, the most unpopular destinations (cities) are :

IAH, ATL, and CVG in the U.S
JNB in Africa
SEL in Asia.

Destinations "unpopular" because the flight is difficult :

JFK, TLV, JNB, PTP/FDF, SDQ, PUJ, HAV : demanding, arrogant, rude, undisciplined, drunk PAX etc....

On the European network, the most unpopular flights are : CDG-NCE, CDG-GVA, CDG-SVO, CDG-ATH

Layovers at exotic beach destinations, world-class cities, and spots with very good shopping or important tourist attractions are the most popular. Layovers at destinations where movement is limited because of security or crime concerns, or because the destination is boring, are least popular.

Regarding the NYC-Florida flights, they are difficult to work, firstly because they are generally filled to capacity, and, secondly, the passenger mix includes lots of tourists, kids and elderly which require a lot of attention. Its easier working a flight from NYC to Chicago, which is only 75% filled and with lots of business travellers that only want to be left alone to work, than a flight with 100% of its seat filled and everyone wanting special attention.

Good Question Dutchjet !

"How many times can one go to Disney ?"

Americans can go there over and over, like every month !

Europeans go there once or twice in their life, just to see what's happening there, and that's it !
Tha's one of the reasons of "Euro Disneyland" failure.... but that's another topic...

I guess the choice may differ per airline. Surprised not many people have explained what exactly makes a destination worthwile or not.

From my experience, or at least what i've heard, factors such as the kind of pax, the succes & duration of the flights (and inflight problems allin), the location and nature of the hotel, the duration of stopover and the possibilities to do fun stuff (which is even more individually oriented) are major contributors to whether or not a destination is popular. Seems to me these may vary per airline as they have their own policy regarding the crewhotels, pax-segment and crewrosters.
FI: I know of two European airlines that fly to BCN;
one crew loved the destination, the other was tired of it; and all due to the above mentioned factors.
