Who Is Living Nearest To An Airport?

Thu Oct 07, 2004 12:48 pm

Excluding those who are living in residential blocks of Airports, who is the nearest one?

I am quite far away from the Lahore Intl Airport but very near to Lahore Walton Airport. 90 seconds (on cycle) from home to hanger for flying.

I live 1 mile away from PIE. Watch ATA 737 and 757 every day, Coast Guard C130s, and DC-9 from Airborn Express.

This might be a question for polls and prefs,

My college is only about a mile from the Terre Haute International Airport, but the only things flying over us are Cessnas and the Indiana National Guard with their F-16s and the like.

I live a half mile from Daytona Beach Airport, sort of under the path for runway 25L which is only about 3200 ft and can only handle Cessnas and pipers. About the largest aircraft I see use 25L are the ERAU Seminoles. Fortunately I have a good view of 25R, but the largest regular user is a Delta MD-80.

Growing up, I lived four blocks from MDW. A school-friend of mine lived, literally, across the street from MDW on Central Ave. One side was MDW, the other was houses. Any Chicagoans know the houses near 58th and Central??

See the park with the baseball fields (and the clearing) on the upper right hand side of the photo just below; my friend's block was directly below it.

My old house was on the other side of the airport. You can see my local park on the bottom portion of the picture.

You can see how close some of the houses get here.

My mum has an uncle that lives in a house right under the diagonal runways path in MIAMI. Right where the offramp of the east-west expressway is onto Lejune South, right there in the corner. I got my obsession for planes playing as a kid there and waiting for 727's to take off.

I dont/didnt live there but their are houses in Nauru, Nauru Island in the Pacific 30 m from the runway, there is also a house 5 metres from the apron and no fence in between! There is also an active public road that passes between the apron and the runway, when an aircraft is taxiing onto the apron a boomgate drops at one end and the airport's truck parks across the road to stop traffic.

That same road also passes by the threshold of the runway (forget which end) which is controlled by traffic lights (if they are working) stopping traffic when the runway is active.

This airport regularly hosts 737, 727 and An-12's also has hosted the Shorts Belfast, A 757 at least once, I believe the old Air Niugini A310 visited as well.

I used to live in Irving, TX very close to DFW. So close that in 1985, DFW bought my house (along with 300 others) and demolished it to make room for the new east runway.

One of the houses was even exploded quite dramatically for an episode of "Walker, Texas Ranger". It was a really bad show - but a cool episode.

Does that qualify as 'close' ??

I live 500ms away from the landing lights of HAM's runway 33 and 1,5 - 2 kms away from the terminals. Unfortunately, they do not like to use 33 for landings as the aircraft are flying above a very populated area. So it is quite seldom when I can read tail numbers by looking out of the kitchen's window.

1/2 mile away from EMT and right under the approach for runway 2. No, we don't get commercial jets but there is the occasional corporate jet and when the airshow is in town past guests have been the Connie and the TriMotor, among other aircraft  Smile

Kind of nostalgic!

Cheers!

I don't really figure into the equation - unless you consider I live within a minute or two of BCT (Boca Raton Municipal Airport). I do live within 45 min of FLL, MIA and PBI - so spotting opportunities are abound....

I live near Bournemouth Aiport which get's alot of Boeing 737-200 traffic which makes alot of noise, we also get lot's of little aircraft that belong to flight schools buzzing over the house.

It is also European Aircharter's home base airport.

I live about a half a mile from PLH, under the approach. From where I work, about 300m from touchdown point I can read the tail numbers off with my bare eyes. Also our house in Spain is right under the approach to MAH, very nice in the summer to sit in the pool with a pint, taking numbers down  Big thumbs up

I live about 4kms from the threshold and can read registrations with binos over the house. A friend used to live 1km from threshold and he hated the cargo at night.

I live about 2500 ft from the Opa Locka Airport (OPF/KOPF), and it's always a delight to see a wide variety of aircraft flying over my home less than 500 feet above as they continue on their final approach.

I've seen some Air Tran DC-9s on their final flight, a Planet 727-100 on its final flight, a USAF C-17 last week, and some Antonov AN-12s and AN-26s on an almost daily basis. I love where I live!

My school is about 700m away from Guaymaral Regional Airport´s runway header. My club is about a mile away, my home is like 50km away from it and like 15 km away from ElDorado International.

You can see the Reykjavik pond beynd the rynway, my house is about 300 meters to the right of it. So I have a pretty good view over the approach to rwy 19. Smile
Occasionaly you can see a B-733 and B-757 land here, but most of the time you see Fokker50, Dornier 228 and small aircraft belonging to the flight schools.
